The Main Street Program in Somerset, Pa. (known as Somerset, Inc.) has an annual event where the do chalk drawings on the sidewalks. Check out their photos. Skilled adult artists do some masterpieces and children fill in the areas in between with their personal creations. Maybe we should copy this idea here in the little city. What do you think?

I’d like to take a second and thank everyone whose been ordering from foxs pizza and as delivery. They had just opened a couple weeks ago and they have had a ro...ugh start with not having the staff to open up earlier and compensate a larger radius for deliveries. My fiancé’s their main driver on the weekends and I must say from the bottom of my heart thank you. With those tips he was able to pay our bills and get the baby everything she needed. It’s people like you that give the delivery drivers and fast food workers a fighting chance. He works very hard and we just all appreciate it. See more

Some of you reading this may be visiting the Monongahela Area from other areas, and some of you may have guests in town (despite all the warnings). With all the other things going on this holiday season, I got behind on promoting our new exhibit at the Main Street Fine Art Gallery at 221 West Main Street, Monongahela (between Main Street Tavern and Main Street Gypsy). The gallery space is the perfect answer to all this season's limitations - the art is inside, behind glass ...(and beautifully lit in the eveninig, I might add), but you visit it by walking into the 15-foot-deep outdoor recess between the two display windows. The current display in this space is art by Helen Putnak Kish, a retired local art teacher and English teacher who also traveled the world and spent time in Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, at the beginning of her career. The exhibit, which in my opinion is "gorgeous," was put together by Monongahela native Elizabeth Elias Huffman who recently moved back to our community from Portland, Oregon recently. Although she is a professional actress, Elizabeth has started a decluttering and interior design firm called "Zhuzh It Up," uding her theater background to design and "stage" really beautiful spaces. Since Elizabeth lives right along West Main Street, I am counting Zhuzh It Up as one of the 26 new businesses that have opened in our Main Street area in the last 26 months. Elizabeth forwarded some biographical material to me from Helen, and I am only now getting a chance to post it. Please visit this exhibit. I know you will enjoy it! Terry A. Necciai, RA, Exec.Dir. MONONGAHELA WHY SHOP ANYWHERE ELSE? for Sweets, Especially I’ve been going around our downtown area looking at the shop displays and photographing as much as I can of the merchandise. This community currently has a huge amount of retail inventory on display! All kinds of clothing, including shoes!, ball caps, custom embroidery, baked goods, soaps and candles, delicatessen items, home décor items, stocking stuffers, greeting cards, books, antiques, hardware, furniture, je...welry, you name it! I’ll draw your attention for a moment to the candy selection and Christmas ornaments available in Sweets by Mrs. C, our ice cream shop, probably the only Christmas-themed business anywhere in our universe with ice cream as the main sales item. But Sweets by Mrs. C is also a well-stocked candy store and a Christmas shop. As many of you know by now, our sweet downtown ice cream parlor closed voluntarily for the past few days as a precaution after an employee tested positive for the Coronavirus. The shop has been professionally cleaned and sanitized and should reopen tomorrow. But think about it - this business lost at least three days of sales in their peak season to follow a protocol, in the interest of the health and sanity of all of us who typically patronize it. This could have happened similarly to any one of us, especially if you operate a business with just a couple of employees. To me, the way the pandemic is affecting small businesses seems like a giant game of musical chairs. You never know whose chair will be missing when the music stops. I thought it would be nice to show what the shop has available (see the attached images) so we could all consider stopping in and buying some candy, or a Christmas ornament, or heavens to Betsy, some ice cream in December. Maybe it will help them make up for the lost days if each of us stops in and does just that. That’s my suggestion. Let’s all support each other, in some small way, with a modest holiday purchase here at the ice cream shop (and at the neighboring West Main Street businesses), and keep this fantastic downtown retail mix going that we’ve been blessed to have recently in Downtown Monongahela. And check out those special hot cocoa bombs the shop will be introducing when it opens tomorrow. Terry A. Necciai Monongahela Main Street Program P.S. - If you had asked two years ago what I wanted for Christmas, it is very likely I would have said for an ice cream parlor to open within view of the Aquatorium and in the midst of the area where we hold parades, fleatiques, and other events each summer. This shop, a real visitor-oriented attraction, opened at the peak of our busiest summer, and for the last 10 months it has survived while the number of events and visitors has been up and down, mostly down as a result of the pandemic. Let’s keep it going until our busy little city’s events schedule is back up and running like it was when it peaked the summer before last.
