A space in our home that is prepared for our Grandson. Each time he enters he stops here, touching his table, sometimes sitting, sometimes moving on. Already ...this has become an expectation and surprise in him, it seems, and he smiles when finding this, still here. In observing children, when I create and prepare environments for them, it is still a wonder in me to see their responses. It takes very little, really, on our parts as adults to bring ourselves down, to the floor, to feel and sense from a child's perspective. We can never know, really, another person's experience. It is their own. Yet we can imagine and observe and prepare.

A few materials on shelves to work with the fingers and hand, explore animals that sleep, or hibernate during winter, color paddles and color tablets, animal pu...zzles, and animal tracks. We also had our large floor light box out for shining light through color and to discover the mixing of colors. Just a glimpsing of what was worked with during this morning's Parent and Child class.

What types of tracks do animals make in the snow? Let's find out by matching. Then tracing the tracks and labeling the animal names. During Montessori Playgroup on a sunny, but cold, afternoon.

"When we help a child to feel secure, feel appreciated, feel that somebody is deeply, truly interested in me, by the way we just look, the way we just listen, we influence that child’s whole personality, the way that child sees life." - Magda Gerber

End of the week and I travel about the environment, from each level of the children who come play at Ananda. Here I am low as a toddler, and moments ago I was ...lying on my back in the infant area, Turning, rolling. What do I see? Hear? What does the carpet beneath me feel like? What is reflected in the mirror beside me? Where can I travel to? Is there space, do I feel a longing to move, reach, touch, grasp or hold? I will next turn towards the area for children ages 3-6, and their parents. As I close my eyes, sitting at a table, how does this feel? My feet touching the floor, my hands feeling the wood of the table. Is this a place for belonging, of community? I ask myself this question throughout my silent journey. This is my preparation of the environment.

Attending to this place of the parent and child, while families are on Holiday. Ananda is resting, too, awaiting the chiming of children entering the doorways. Your sounds, sights, touches, movement and joy are the awakenings of discovery and wonder, as you return.

(Polygoon, 1922)
