Dr. Frank W Preston is the Father of Moraine State Park. He and Edmund Watts Arthur, namesake of Lake Arthur, both amateur geologists, together conducted geolo...gic studies that determined that the Muddy Creek flats (now the lake bottom) were composed of deposits of a glacial lake deposited during the Ice Age. In 1950, Dr. Preston led 80 geologists on the 16th annual Field Conference of Pennsylvania Geologists to show the results of the work that he had been doing. This photo is of Dr. Preston, exactly 70 years ago today, May 27, 1950, leading the Field Conference. I first met Dr. Preston at the 1975 Field Conference. Although he was not a professional geologist, he was a regular attendee at the Field Conference. If you visit his home and laboratory at Preston Park in Butler Township, you will see his collection of name tags from various professional conferences he attended, including a number of Field Conferences, on a bulletin board in the reception area. We’re back again with updates about our new tour boat. Today we answer what you are all wondering. It’s the end of October, why launch now? We want to be read...y to welcome you in Spring 2021! The boat was delayed in its arrival. It was originally due in late spring and we had fully intended to cruise this summer. As the production of the boat began again in the summer, we had still hoped to receive it in time to take fall foliage cruises. But this time, we were hampered by permits needed to transport such a large load from TN to PA. We took delivery now to be able to launch and train with the builder. Once launched you will see us over the coming weeks performing stability testing (those yellow buckets represent the weight of passengers!) as well as training of all of our volunteer captains. Once all has been completed a new cover will be made, the boat will be removed from the water and winterized. See more

Our new educational tour boat has officially hit the water at Lake Arthur! We know that there has been a lot of excitement about the arrival of the new boat. Wi...th that enthusiasm comes inquiry and questions. Join us on our Facebook page in the coming days as we tell you the story of MPF and the new educational tour boat! Let’s start with who we are. Moraine Preservation Fund is a non-profit that strives to promote community stewardship of our local state parks. We collaborate with park staff to work on important projects and programs to enhance your visit to the parks! We are most known for working along with park teams to reintroduce the Osprey to the park, our annual Winterfest Celebration, Osprey camera live stream and the Nautical Nature educational tour boat. Tune in daily as we share more info!
