(Edited with updated PA survey numbers per Dr Scott's comment below) Philly area folks!! In December our team at Temple's, Program for Maternal Health Equity (...PMHE), along with Temple’s Departments of OB-GYN and General Internal Medicine have together signed on as a health system partner in collaboration with an amazing group of researchers based out of the University of California, San Francisco, led by Dr. Karen Scott, epidemiologist, and obstetric hospitalist whose work integrates social sciences and humanities into participatory health services and quality improvement research, in The SACRED Birth Study. "The SACRED Birth Study is designed for, by, and with Black mothers and Black birthing people to share information about their patient experience in hospital settings during labor, birth, and postpartum in the six key areas: Safety, Autonomy, Communication, Racism, Empathy, and Dignity." We are beginning our Temple SACRED Birth recruitment efforts in earnest this week...so far 15 surveys have been completed for the entire state of Pennsylvaniawe want the voices of Black birthing people from Philly and around PA to be part of this vital and visionary study! Please share widely...and support Temple hearing directly from community members in order to improve quality of care and patient experiences within the health system. While we welcome and encourage all Black birthing people who gave birth in a hospital in 2020 to participate, we are especially interested in folks who gave birth at Temple University Hospital so that their voice can drive efforts for perinatal quality improvement. All patient experts (whether they gave birth at Temple or other Philly area hospitals) who complete the survey will be send a $100 electronic gift card for their time and input. A shareable flyer and a link with more information, the SACRED birth website or and links for following the study on IG or Twitter are in the comments!

Hey folks with children in their lives...I found this article from Dr Laura Markham useful to read today...even if it doesn't fully account for the intersectional cumulative stressors and factors facing some families more than others. Sending love and deep breaths.

Please vote for Asasiya Muhammad of Inner Circle Midwifery to advance as a Health Hero in Philly! A vote for her will also support the Maternity Care Coalition's Community Doula and Perinatal Community Health Worker program!

Friends I know it is so easy to scroll past yet another post about something difficult happening in the world. I love and appreciate that so many of my posts about my family life get so many people viewing and commenting and also appreciate how many FB friends have supported various efforts I’ve tried to amplify over the past few months but PLEASE... especially white friends and most especially white folks in the birth world-take a moment to read what NY midwife Carmen Mojic...Continue reading

The birth fund is happening!!!! In the past 2 months we've raised over $33K and 11 applicants have been placed with midwives. Our goal is to raise $50K to suppo...rt 20 BIPOC families in the Philly area to access home birth care during the pandemic. . Little background about the fund: myself, @thepeoplesmidwife @barakabirth and @magpimama all agreed to do 20 births in 2020 at cost to help address the widening disparity of families wanting to switch to home birth during the pandemic but unable to do so because of cost. The fund was created to fill this gap by helping black and brown pregnant people access home birth midwifery care. . Link to donate in bio! And spread the word to Philly pregnant people! . #blackmamasmatter #blackmomsmatter #blacklivesmatter #blackwomendohomebirth See more

Philly area folks- can you donate any of these needed items for immigrant families expecting new babies next month?

Motherland Midwifery 21.10.2020

Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort so far! Today is a great day to give to help us reach our goal and support more BIPOC families in Philly in having birth experiences grounded in reproductive justice!!

#Repost @sistersong_woc with @get_repost Black transgender people are forced to live at the intersections of racism and transphobia. They deal with rampant harassment, being forced into a cycle of poverty and for too many - their lives are cut short by police brutality and weaponized hate. We will say their names - NinaPop, Tony McDade, Dominique Fells and Riah Milton and we will work to make it clear #BLACKTRANSLIVESMATTER!

Hey white birthworkers, Our White Work: White Birth Workers Taking Accountability & Action for Racial Justice is an evolving effort that started earlier this spring and we invite you to sign up and participate.... See below for details on our next call this Sunday at 4 pm and how to prepare for it. Thanks- hope to see the delegation from the Philadelphia area grow as we move forward. Please share in your networks as well. with hope and commitment to making things different... Christy ************************************************************ Our White Work continues as we organize toward taking greater accountability and mobilize as a network of white birth workers. This process has required us to move forward with great attention to not replicate models of whiteness (such as hierarchy and a top-down organization) but rather take the care needed to build an alliance that can respond to the urgency of this moment and our role within dismantling systems of white supremacy. This way of organizing moves more slowly than many of us are used to, and can be uncomfortable. Our next call will be June 14th at 4pm-6pm EST (and moving forward every other Sunday at this time). One core value that we are committed to is to center and amplify the solutions and leadership of BIPOC organizations leading the charge on anti-racism within perinatal health. We will be sharing a draft of our core values on Sunday. During Sunday’s meeting we’ll be trying something differently. We heard the feedback for longer time spent in breakout groups, and also for more education, so we will be starting and ending as a large group and splitting into sections for the middle. In one section, Aimee will lead a workshop on whiteness 101 that will be a useful start to those new to this work or who have not been able to make it to all our meetings and want to talk about why we have been structuring this way. The other section will be focusing on accountability. We'll outline several key themes that are emerging, and then split up into small groups (2-3 people) for accountability work to dig in deeper. This will be followed up by actionable steps directly after and in the coming weeks. If you’re planning to come to Sunday’s meeting please take time to watch this video series on accountability as it will inform and guide our work together. (link posted in the comments) To register for this meeting, fill out this form and the Zoom link will be sent to you on Sunday Also, if you’re new to this group check out our google folder with all previous meeting notes, small group prompts, and presentations, linked in comments). Also in the comments is a general sign up for our mailing list if you are interested but can't attend this Sunday. Thank you so much for showing up and making a commitment to do this work collectively. In solidarity, Team at Our White Work (feel free to reach out directly to our new email [email protected]. Your emails will be received by Madeline and Aimee)

Did you know that Mother's Day began as a call to action to improve the lives of families through health and peace? Ann Jarvis of Appalachia founded the precurs...or to Mother’s Day in 1858 to promote sanitation in response to high infant mortality. After the Civil War, abolitionist Julia Ward Howe made a Mother’s Day call to women to protest the carnage of war.
