Many of you remember when Wally the bomb sniffing dog visited our school two years ago. Today he lost his battle with cancer. R.I.P. Wally.

Listen, I’ll be the 1st one to tell you that parenting isn’t easy! I’ve been one for over 22 years! However, I will also tell you that no parent who has ever ...signed their child up at either of my martial arts schools, over the last 22 years, has ever joined to get their black belt. They joined because the parents wanted their child to learn discipline, gain self confidence, and build real life skills that other activities don’t directly grow. Then... it gets a bit hard to get them to go to class... (again I recognize that parenting isn’t easy!!) At this point, parents begin to negotiate with things like just get your black belt and then we will let you quit. OH NO! Big mistake! Once those words are uttered the student stops trying as hard (why should they? They know they are quitting). The life skills we are trying to teach then go in one ear and out the other because the child isn’t mentally present for an activity that they enjoy while there but sometimes don’t want to stop playing their x-box so parents are convinced that they don’t like it. (I’ll say it again, parenting isn’t easy!!!). Parents, if you’ve read this far, you see the value that there is in making (YES MAKING) your child continue their training! Until when? Good question. I have a better one... How do you want to feel when you drop them off for college and drive away? I know for many of you this is years and years away... but it will get here (and sooner than you think). When my wife and I dropped our oldest 2 off at college (one 4 years ago and one last year), we left knowing that they had 10+ years of Martial Arts (self defense) Training along with all of the leadership skills that they learned in classes... wanna know the most important one based on what they tell me now??? COMMITMENT.... They gave us such a hard time through several years about training, but we made them continue. Now, they tell me that they learned what commitment meant because we didn’t let them quit when they got bored, or when their friends quit, or when it wasn’t their thing. They actually thanked us for not letting them give up and we know that these qualities will and have helped tbem navigate real adult life issues! Thanks for reading and if you or your child has stopped training , this is not a guilt trip! But if it stirs something in you, it may be the right time to get back on the mat! See more

I've been meaning to share this for quite some time and today I had some spare time. I started my journey with Mountain Karate in 2014. Little did I know karate... would be preparing me all that I am doing now. While I am not training right now at Mountain Karate due to my work schedule, I owe all my friends and family a debt of gratitude. I would not be where I am today with out all of you. Master Kevin Kresge, Master Paul R. Maglionico, Master Jan Kresge, Master Paige Steigerwalt, Master Marty Olewine, Master Rod, Master Steve, Master Benny, Master Ron Keblish, Master Irv Emerson, Tyler Shinsky, Paul Heimer and Christine Searfoss. My training has shown me I have the capability of doing great things. Thank you. See more
