Mt. Airy Pediatrics announces the retirement of senior and founding pediatrician Herbert M. ("Nick") Cady, Jr., effective December 31, 2015. Dr. Cady first opened the doors at Mt. Airy Pediatrics in 1974, after completing his residency at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Over the ensuing 41 years of change in the practice, the community, and the medical environment, he has experienced both the joy and humility of caring for patients and their parents -- often, he says..., "with needs beyond what medicine itself could provide." While he says, "I will miss most the joy of holding babies and seeing longtime patients become parents themselves," he looks forward to spending time with his family and with interests old (yes, riding his motorcycle -- with his helmet!) and new (writing fiction). As his colleagues, we are immeasurably grateful for his time here - for what he has taught us and for what he has given our community - and for the legacy of Mt Airy Pediatrics we look forward to carrying on. With its team of nurse practitioners and physicians, he feels he is leaving the practice in strong, caring hands -- ones which will carry on the quality of the part 41 years. We all wish Dr. Cady the best, and we invite you to join us. If you have greetings or memories to share in words or pictures for a scrapbook, please feel free to send them to practice manager Jenny Louis-Jadotte at [email protected] or drop them at our office. Meanwhile, while we are currently seeking a pediatrician to join us in offering Mt Airy's style of pediatric care with a personal touch well into the future, we are also ready for you to schedule your next visit with one of us today! Hey folks! We know this has been on the news incessantly since yesterday. We are so glad you chose to come to us directly for accurate information. We value your trust and welcome your calls to the office if you have any additional questions about this issue. Here are the facts about the CDC's announcements yesterday about the effectiveness of this year's flu vaccine as explained by our own Nurse Susan: "This year's flu vaccine is designed to provide protection against 4 diff...erent strains of influenza. The bad news you heard is that the strain that's the most common going around the US now, while it is matched for in the vaccine, turns out to have mutated since the vaccine was made. This means the vaccine is going to be less effective against that strain than we hoped. The good news is the vaccine is still somewhat effective against that strain and that the other 3 less-common strains are well-matched and effective. Although this year's flu vaccine may not be as effective as ones in other years, it's still your child's best protection against getting sick and against serious complications. The difference this year is that, if you think your child does have the flu -- high fever, muscle aches, and cough -- we'll ask you to contact us early, so we can determine if antiviral medications can help. (Antivirals don't cure the flu the way antibiotics cure bacterial infections, but they can help, and they're especially important for the youngest children and children with asthma and other medical conditions.) If you didn't get the vaccine for your child yet, yes, you still should - and then just keep those other recommendations in mind, too. And if your child did get the vaccine already, you shouldn't worry. Just remember all the other precautions about avoiding germs, like handwashing - and remember to call us if you do think your child has the flu." The following video clip from NBC news does a good job presenting the facts. Be safe and have a great weekend everyone!

We have been remiss in getting out the exciting news about the newest addition to our Mt. Airy Pediatrics family- Nurse Practictioner Bridget S. Sullivan! Many of you may have met Bridget as she did gave many of the flu vaccines our patients received during the month of October. We'll post a pic soon, but don't wait for it to send Bridget a warm welcome :-)
