The construction of the Phelps Student Center, sometime in between 1973 and 1974.
Here is a lovely photo of the Venard Apostolic School's chapel (circa 1967), now commonly known as CSU's 2nd floor library. . #clarkssummituniversity #murphymemoriallibrary
Merry Christmas from Murphy Memorial Library! We hope you have a blessed day tomorrow remembering the birth of our Savior. . The Library is closed and will reopen January 18 for the spring semester. Staff are working remotely through December 23 and then January 4-11 to assist you and will respond to phone messages and emails during those times. All CSU offices will be closed December 24-January 3. Have a wonderful Christmas break, everyone!
Did you know that part of the space the library now calls home used to be the dining hall? Pictured here appears to be what is now the 300s room. This photo was taken when the Venard Apostolic School, a Roman Catholic School specializing in the teaching of Latin, owned the property. After BBC bought the property in 1967, the dining hall remained in Jackson Hall until the Phelps Student Center was completed in 1974. . #clarkssummituniversity #murphymemoriallibrary

Published in 1982, the 50th anniversary of the school, the book offers thoroughly researched history of BBC from its beginnings in 1932 onward in a readable style. If you have spent time in the second floor library, you have likely noticed the Torah Scrolls. . A Sefer Torah scroll contains the five books of Moses, which are written by hand on animal parchment. A Torah scroll is traditionally kept within the Ark of the synagogue. The scroll is read only on certain occasions. . According to our sources, the particular sheet photographed here is originally from a scroll estimated to have been made in the late 1300s or early 1400s. It was ...made in Northern Europe, and the parchment required 55 sheep to create. The original scroll was 110 feet long. Being this old, it was repaired 185 times throughout its life. It came to the United Sates from Israel in 2002. This sheet contains Leviticus 23:28-26:26. . #clarkssummituniversity #murphymemoriallibrary #torahscroll See more

Interested in learning more about CSU history or how the school has evolved over the years? Come take a look at the the library’s collection of the school’s yearbooks, which are located in the 200s room. The yearbook was known as the Seminarion until 1972 when it was renamed The Tower. . The particular year pictured here is 1968. During this year, BBS began the transition from Johnson City to the property CSU now calls home. The property was purchased in November of 1967 ...for $900,000 dollars, despite the fact it was valued at $4,200,000. . Want to see more? Have you ever payed close attention to some of the symbolism incorporated into the second floor library? . One fascinating detail are the symbols for the writers of the four gospels. These are above the doors leaving the library. Associating the gospels with these symbols has been a tradition since Irenaeus (3rd century), discussed it in his Against Heresies. . Matthew’s gospel is depicted by a Divine Man since it begins with the lineage of Christ. This demonstrates His h...uman right to be king as the son of David. . The Gospel of Mark is depicted as a winged lion. This gospel begins by quoting from Isaiah: the voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord. This prophetic tone apparently called the roar of a lion in the wilderness to mind to Irenaeus and others also in that time. Furthermore, it represents royalty, and Christ is our king. . Luke’s gospel is represented by a winged ox. This gospel begins with John the Baptist’s birth being announced to Zachariah, who was offering a sacrifice in the temple. Ultimately, the ox is to remind one of Christ’s priestly sacrifice on the cross. . Lastly, the Gospel of John is depicted by a winged eagle, which deals with lofty or high theological considerations. This is evident from the very first verses discussing the incarnation. Christ’s divinity is on full display in this gospel. . We hope you enjoyed learning about these symbols. Let us know if there’s anything in the library you’d like to learn more about! . #clarkssummituniversity #murphymemoriallibrary #architecture #churchhistory See more

Murphy Memorial Library is full of many wonderful resources, some of which you may not know about. . One fantastic resource the library has is the writings of the Church Fathers! The Fathers were early Christian thinkers and theologians who have played a vital role in defending and systemizing the Christian faith. We are indebted to them more than we often realize. These include Augustine of Hippo (354-480 AD), Clement of Rome (35-88 AD), Ambrose of Milan (339-397), and Ignat...ius of Antioch (?-108 AD). . Whether they are arguing against heresy, writing on a book of the Bible, or dealing with a specific topic, the Church Fathers have much to offer.
