Are you ready for Groundhog Day? What do you think the prediction will be for 2021? Watch and listen to the story of Punxsutawney Phyllis by Susanna Leonard Hill! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmOQOp87xKw ... Phyllis is not like other groundhogs. She loves to splash in the cold river in springtime, roast in the summer sun, tromp through the winter snow. Every kind of weather makes her happy. This year on February 2, she is excited because she can feel that an early spring is in the air. But how will she get Uncle Phil out of bed to make his official Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog Day prediction? Check out www.groundhog.org on February 2nd at 6:30 a.m. to virtually tune in to Phil’s live prognostication. Here's hoping for an early spring!
Check out this great literary opportunity for students in 4th-8th grades through the Include Me Program! The mission of Include Me is to provide on-site, intensive training and technical assistance to school districts, teachers, and families to increase their capacity to educate students with significant disabilities in general education classes. From Include Me:... "We feel it is equally as important to educate the peers of the aforementioned students. We started a new program titled Disability Acceptance Through Literature for just that purpose. The first book in this new program is Out of My Mind by Mrs. Sharon Draper. The novel is told by Melody, an incredibly intelligent 5th grade student who has a photographic memory, and Cerebral Palsy. In this discussion we talk about acceptance and inclusion, different kinds of disabilities and abilities, friendship and understanding and so much more. Because the peers will be future co-workers, employers, acquaintances, service providers, neighbors, etc. they have a right to learn and understand disabilities so that they can help to make and live in a truly inclusive society." The book study will begin on March 17th, 2021 and run every Wednesday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm until May 19th, 2021. Discussions will be held via Google Classroom and Google Meet. Students can register for the ‘Student Session’ on the website at www.includemepa.org.
Today is a great day (or evening) to stay inside and craft! We still have some of these kits left. Call the library to reserve one for pick-up or mention when you stop by for curbside pick-up of your other materials. New Valentine's Day-themed to-go kits will be ready February 8th!
Even though the library is still closed to the public we now have free, publicly available Wi-Fi. It expands into our outdoor areas, including parking lots, up to a football field length away from the building. Any member of the public can access the Wi-Fi on their phones, tablets, or laptops by entering their library card number or ZIP code. Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, public libraries in Westmoreland County remain committed to providing stellar library services, including free internet access, to residents.
