MISSING: "Hats Off" starring Laurel and Hardy Title: Hats Off Starring Laurel and Hardy Status: Missing Date: July-August, 1927... Artist: Stanley Laurel (1890-1965) and Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) Origin: Hollywood, California Media: Nitrate film Meas: Unknown Last known: About 1930 What is it? An original print of this silent film starring Laurel and Hardy Why is it important?: The only Laurel and Hardy film missing in its entirety. Some consider this to be the first film in which the comic duo’s signature personalities were solidified. What does it look like?: A reel of nitrate film stock. What is its history?: This 1927 silent film in which Stan and Ollie attempt to sell a washing machine ends in an argument between the two where they knock each others’ hats off. The mayhem spreads and soon dozens of other men end up scuffling and knocking each others’ hats off. The movie ends with the police hauling everyone off except Laurel and Hardy who are left to try and locate their own hats amongst the many lying all around. Hats Offwas a success when first released and was one of the films that made Laurel and Hardy household names. It is also considered to be the first film in which the comic duo’s signature personalities, costumes, and gags solidified into a unique identity. Laurel and Hardy's Academy Award-winning The Music Box was a heavily reworked version of this film. What clues do we have?: One source gives the latest release date for Hats Off at 1929, when it was first shown in Germany and says that it was still in distribution in the United States in 1930. Another gives the last public showing as being in 1928.
