In light of the tragic murder of Samantha Josephson, it seems like a very appropriate time to remind users of ride sharing apps, of some basic safety tips. Thes...e suggestions were gleaned many sources including both Uber and Lyft web sites and will go a long way to reduce the risk involved to users and drivers. At the end of the day a ride sharing service is still taking a ride from a stranger so following common sense precautions is a must and should be exercised every time. 1. Request and wait for a ride inside. Let’s face it; we all look alike while waiting for our ride. The app is open on your phone and we are watching closely for our ride. In addition to attracting undue attention, we may be so focused on our phones that we are not as aware of our surroundings as we should be. Let’s not forget that this fancy smart phone that we can’t live without is also one of the most popular items stolen. 2- Match License; make, model and color of the vehicle before you enter. Ride sharing apps specifically provide these details so you know exactly what kind of vehicle is coming for you. Take a moment to confirm this. 3- Your driver WILL have your name. Before you get into the car ask them who they are here to pick up. No correct name= No Ride! 4- Your app will provide a recent photo of all drivers. Before getting into the car visually confirm that your driver matches the app. 5- Do not exchange cash with operators. If you want to tip your driver use the app. 6- Follow your route on the app to make sure your route is taking you where it should be. This requires you to have a general idea of where you are looking to go. 7-Share your rides with a trusted person. This will alert them to aspects of your ride just so someone else knows. Lyft and Uber allow you to designate someone who will be automatically notified of your use of the service. 8- Do not sit in the front seat. Distance is usually your friend. Ride in the back seat and use your seat belt. 9- Make sure child locks are not engaged. 10- Do not share personal information with your driver. This includes things like schedule, destination, reason for travel, relationship status and phone numbers. 11- Check previous rider ratings. While no guarantee, they can help identify drivers who have provided good service to other users. 12- Travel with a sober person who can look out for you if intoxicated. 13- Trust your instincts- If something doesn't feel right don't get in the car. Decline the ride and request another ride. 14- Call 911 in an emergency Ride sharing has become an important part of modern day life. While the overwhelming majority of rides go smoothly, unfortunately this is not always the case. Please use good common sense when ride sharing.
