Through its annual Holiday Toy Drive in Belize, Living Word Church wishes to spread as much positivity and love to the people of San Pedro bringing families together and putting the biggest smiles on children’s faces. On December 18, 2020, 1,000 children received a special toy from Santa, a holiday cupcake, and a hearty apple to ring in the holiday season. Words can...not fully describe the happiness and gratitude that was seen in the smiles of every single child as they received their special gift from Santa. There is so much need out there right now, especially for basic food supplies, that we decided to go with smaller toys for the kids and dedicate more money to helping feed families... Belize and Guatemala are in the final stages of an ongoing dispute before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is expected to be formally settled overwhelmingly in Belize’s favor in the near future. The conflict dates back to colonial times, when two of the three major powers in the AmericasSpain and Britainreached an informal agreement to allow Britain to colonize what is currently known as Belize. Spain, however, never ceded its claim to the territory, and that... refusal was inherited automatically by independent Guatemala. The Guatemalans gave their de facto consent to Britain’s control over Belize in the 1850s in order to stop Britain’s westward expansion, and a clear demarcation line was established in the west and south of the country. As part of the Treaty of 1859, the Guatemalans would retain a southern land corridor to the Caribbean Sea in which Great Britain would lay a railway line. The British never ended up laying the railway line, which is at the core of Guatemala’s claim 161 years later. In principle, Guatemala is demanding that all of Belize is a state of Guatemala, but this has already been rejected by the United Nations at the time that Belize joined as a sovereign state. The ICJ is expected at most to rule that Guatemala deserves financial compensation for the railway line and certain sea rights, while fully ratifying Belize’s borders and strengthening its international legal position. Belize is confidently unperturbed ahead of the ICJ ruling, which is certain to keep Belize highly attractive to foreign investors and retirees.
