Trauma is an experience, not an incident. It is the emotional and mental result of abnormally stressful events that overwhelm your sense of security and safety,... making you feel helpless. When crime victims/survivors share their stories while providing testimony, at speaking events or simply talking with trusted friends, it is common for the same emotions, senses and feelings to return to the body. Heart rate can quicken, pulse may race, even eyes may begin to dart quickly. Headaches and stomach aches are common. Remember that trauma is stored in the body. Just like an emotional response, physical symptoms are to be expected when trauma resurfaces. Feeling angry or crying even laughter when nervousness is overwhelming is typical. Traumatic memories are often linked to our senses what we heard, felt, smelled, saw, tasted. These techniques can help ease the intensity by engaging your senses. There are times where your clinician, friends and support system may not be available. Sometimes they are available, but you want to practice handling your anxiety and self-harm urges on your own. With Calm Harm, you take control of your thoughts and ride the wave that comes when urges of self-harm arise. Even if you don’t experience urges to self-harm, Calm Harm can assist in dealing with overwhelming emotional reactions and periods of intense distress. Calm Harm was design...ed to help aid in reducing thoughts of self-harm and anxiety by using evidence-based therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Primarily used for impulse control and emotional regulation, this type of assistance helps individuals learn to identify and manage their emotional mind, track underlying triggers, and harmful urges. Calm Harm provides different categories that users are able to rely on to ride out the wave of self-harm. These categories include: Distract: Helps you with learning self-control Comfort: Helps you care rather than harm Express Yourself: Helps you get harmful feelings out in a healthy way Release: Helps provide safe alternatives to self-injury Breath: Helps you increase relaxation and increase feeling calm Calm Harm lets you practice new skills, restructure your thoughts, monitor your progress and feel more confident that you can handle these situations. Calm Harm is free to download on any device and can be found in the App Store and Google Play. Calm Harm does not collect any personal information and is an aid to treatment, but does not replace it.

Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of Walter Wallace, Jr. and all those who have suffered or died because of the lack of measured and humane responses to mental health crises. There needs to be a focus on de-escalation and use of nonlethal methods in these situations. As a society, we must demand better for the treatment of people with mental illness.A mental health crisis is the only medical emergency in which we do not dispatch an ambulance and appropriately tra...ined individuals. We would never yell commands at an individual during a heart attack and expect them to comply. Yet, a person in crisis, who is possibly experiencing a break from reality, is expected to react rationally while being confronted by officers with their weapons drawn and pointed at them.In fact, just last year, nearly 1 in 4 people killed by law enforcement had a mental illness. The killing of Walter Wallace, Jr. is yet another in a long list of deaths of people with mental illness that could have been prevented, and it is difficult to comprehend why Walter was shot 14 times.NAMI is resolved and continues to work towards the goal of an equitable and accessible mental health system. There is hope with the National Suicide Designation Act of 2020, which by July 2022, will establish 9-8-8 as a universal number for mental health crises and suicide prevention. For 9-8-8 to be effective, we need communities to ensure there’s a well-trained response to calls, including mobile teams of mental health professionals who are trained at de-escalating to respond in situations like this. These teams work to establish rapport and connect someone to treatment and support. Fortunately, the new law enables states to enact fees, like those in place for 9-1-1, that can support the development of mental health services at the local level to receive and respond to crisis calls. NAMI calls for systematic changes to prevent these avoidable tragedies, like the death of Walter Wallace, Jr. We also call on federal, state and local elected officials to invest in mental health crisis response. No one should ever again lose their life because they are experiencing a mh crisis and are trying to get help
