This #WINWednesday we honor Lt. Susan Ahn Cuddy, a Korean American, who served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the WAVES and became the Navy’s first woman gunne...ry officer during World War II. Cuddy's pioneering spirit and can-do attitude helped open doors for women and Asian Americans in the military. This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we salute her and all of her hard work! #NavyWomenMakingHistory : https://go.usa.gov/xHdMj See more

This #WINWednesday, we honor retired Command Master Chief Dee Allen. During her 34 year Navy career, she served from Japan to Hawaii, & from Pensacola to Fort ...Meade before retiring at the time as the Navy's most senior enlisted woman in 2020. "It is important for us to take the time to reflect on and express gratitude to the many trailblazing women throughout our history who, in the face of overwhelming adversity, broke down barriers to help remake the world as it should be." For #WomensHistoryMonth, we will be highlighting and celebrating the many accomplishments and contributions made by women throughout Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s (N...NSY) history. In the post-war era, women began to rejoin the NNSY workforce and some began to rise in the ranks taking on new roles within the shipyard. In 1957, Edna Etheridge became the shipyard’s first female senior manager when she was promoted to the role of Supervisory Budget Specialist in the Comptroller Department, heading the Budget and Statistics Division. By the 1970s women were in many shops and 1971 saw the first female graduates of NNSY’s Apprentice Program. The program would see its first female valedictorian in 1979, when Shop 31 Apprentice and mother of two, Laura Jeanne Priest graduated with a 3.86 GPA. The 1970s also brought the first female engineers to the shipyard. An article in the Mar. 1978 edition of Service to the Fleet, focused on the expanding roles of female engineers in the shipyard and included apprentice graduate and future Virginia Senator Louise Lucas. #USNavy #NNSY #NNSYHistory #WomensHistory

Happy K9 Veterans Day to our four-legged shipmates, like Lola, who spent her time in service searching for contraband on submarines. She's been spending her retirement with Command Master Chief Raj Sodhi, command master chief of Naval Submarine Base New London.

This President’s Day, we celebrate the only president to serve in the #SubmarineForce, 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter. In 1946, Carter gradua...ted from the U.S. Naval Academy and reported to USS Wyoming (E-AG 17). After serving two years on surface ships, Carter applied for submarine duty. Upon completion of the U.S. Navy Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, Carter was assigned to his first submarine, USS Pomfret (SS 391) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Detaching from Pomfret on Feb. 1, 1951, Carter assumed the role as the engineering officer for the precommissioning detail for USS K-1 (SSK 1). After the boat’s commissioning on Nov. 10, 1951, Carter went on to serve as the executive officer, engineering officer and electronics repair officer. It was during this time on K-1 that Carter qualified for command of a submarine. In 1952, Carter began working with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Division of Reactor Development. His time with the AEC was part of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover’s program for the creation of nuclear-powered submarines. Preparing to become the engineering officer for the nuclear power plant that would be placed on USS Seawolf (SSN 575), Carter helped set up training for the boat’s future enlisted Sailors. Unfortunately, his father became sick during this time and died in July of 1953. On Oct. 9, 1953, Lt. Jimmy Carter was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy to tend to family matters. Carter would go on to enter Georgia politics and later become the state’s governor in 1970. In 1977, Carter was elected as president of the United States. The Seawolf-class attack submarine USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) is named after the former president for his service in the Submarine Force and contributions to the creation of nuclear-powered submarines. #USNavy #SubmarineForce #PresidentsDay
