To those who see, know, or love parents of kids with disabilities, there's something us parents want you to know: we are always trying. A friend of mine messag...ed me recently about the extreme behaviors her child with an intellectual disability was displaying. Something, I’m familiar with. But she followed it up by saying, My family thinks I don’t discipline him enough. They don’t get it. She’s right. They don’t. They can’t. So, let me help you try to understand our families just a little bit better. The behaviors are something many of us parents are constantly managing. We’ve gone to classes, we’ve read books, we’ve tried strategies, stopped those strategies, and started them again, stopped again, found a new method andrepeat. Our kid’s behaviors also come in waves. My son went into a downward trend after Christmas that lasted through February. Then one day it faded. Nothing we did, to my knowledge, brought him out of it. We managed symptoms but did not provide a cure. For now, this is part of his life. And we are trying. My friend is trying. We are all trying. Sometimes our trying looks like taking a more hands-off approach and sometimes it’s more hands-on. Sometimes it looks similar to how we parent our typically developing children, and sometimes it looks starkly different. We understand our kid’s communication issues are frustrating to them. They respond in ways that don’t make sense to the outside world, or sometimes even to us. But they are trying, too. Living in a world not accessible to them takes more effort. Parenting them often takes more effort. So, when you think we should be doing more to intervene, know that our current way of dealing might be doing less. If you think we are being too harsh, maybe our kids are more capable of understanding than you realize. The bottom line is we are parenting disabled children in a world that is not accommodating to them. We are trying to figure out how to best accommodate them. Sometimes, they are exhausted. Sometimes we are, too. We want the world to have high expectations of our kids, while also realizing that they need more support and grace in the process. We try to remember these things ourselves. And it is a constant balancing act. We know you can’t know our lives. But know this: we are always trying. His hands are balled into little fists. He’s ready to take down anyone in his path. He’s wearing a scowl and his words are like acid burning anyone who dares to... talk to him. He looks oppositional. He looks difficult. He looks angry. But in reality, he’s anxious. Not every kid curls up in a ball and shakes. Not every kid cries and says their scared. Some kids fight. some kids scream. Some kids dig their heels in. As a parent it can be hard to tell the difference, but it’s key. How you handle a raging anxious kid, is different than how you would handle typical behavior. In my house I’ve learned how to tell the difference. And I’ve learned to help my son when he’s anxiously raging and seems prickly and unapproachable. If you need help deciphering the difference, I wrote this article: https://www.anxioustoddlers.com/angry-boy/

I wanted to follow up on yesterday's post about tantrums with some important things to keep in mind. Our mindset matters. It's what colors h...ow we respond to our children during these high stress moments. For example, if we think it's our job to fix the situation and make our kids stop crying, we will more susceptible to losing our shxt and yelling. # 10 is key so make sure you circle and star that one. Our energy during tantrums is everything. Taking the time to get grounded what allows you to meet the moment. What questions do you have about this? I can talk about tantrums all day long. Want to take your parenting skills up a notch? Struggling with knowing the best ways to respond to tantrums, aggression, defiance, etc in the moment? Confused on how to discipline? Want a mom community around you to learn this stuff? Check out my new private online community, The Mom Sisterhood. It's perfect for mothers with young children (under 8).
