Memorial Day Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2021 will occur on Monday, May 31. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history

RSVP for The Tradition and Unlearning Anti-Blackness: A Conversation with Greg Corbin on Monday, May 17, 6:30 PM Join poet, teacher, and community activist Greg Corbin for a conversation about the One Book, One Philadelphia featured title, Jericho Brown's poetry collection, The Tradition. This guided, interactive conversation will focus on decolonizing and unlearning from a place of compassion and care. The poems in The Tradition offer opportunities to address the ways that... anti-Blackness is built into the foundations of our society, and together we will explore how we can challenge and dismantle conditioned and harmful stories in ourselves and our communities. Reading the book beforehand isn't required to join and participate. Philadelphian Greg Corbin is a father, husband, son, and brother. He's also an educator, poet, author, speaker, imagination activist, human-centered DEIA practitioner/consultant, and mental health advocate with 20 years of experience in education, arts, and human development. He strives to innovate and create strategies that amplify holistic community engagement. He is the author of Breathing Ashes: A Poetic Guide to Walking Through the Fire and Coming Out Reborn, and an upcoming project called "Black Male Security: Redefining Holistic Safety During Vulnerable Times." Greg is also the founder of the award-winning Philly Youth Poetry Movement and cofounder of the Slam League, both transforming thousands of lives. Currently, he is serving as the Director of Restorative Justice for Mural Arts Philadelphia, focusing on creating a culture of redemption and purpose in the field of reentry. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-tradition-and-unlearning-a

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherin...gs. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society. https://juneteenth.com/ See more
