From the Mauch Chunk Democrat, 15 Nov 1873. For information, coal was never found on the Broad Mountain. The Nesquehoning Tunnel, referred to in the article, was later called the Lansford - Hauto Tunnel. It had just been completed in 1873.

The following pictures were provided by John Koehler, who wrote: "Thought maybe you could use the photos on your page for christmas. My Grandfather William Snyder lived on Catawissa street. He served in the 26th infantry regiment of the Big Red One. These cards were among some of the many letters he sent home while overseas." Thanks John!!
