The New Alex Borough Council held its monthly meeting last night. Prior to the meeting, council was addressed by Randy Bacher, husband of the late Mayor Dottie Bacher. He thanked the council for its support throughout Dottie’s illness and was especially thankful for the recognition of Dottie’s service, with the dedication of the playground on Church Street. Randy then made a donation to the borough for projects or maintenance to the playground. The borough and council we...re very appreciative of his gesture. Administratively, the meeting was altered. With the vacancy of the mayor’s position, council president Tim Ruane assumes the duties of mayor. This left the meeting to be chaired by council Vice President Bev King. The council will form a Vacancy Board on the 23rd of June to seek to fill the remaining term of the mayor. The vacancy board will comprise of four council members and one volunteer resident of the borough. And update on the status of the tennis court refacing was given. Tim Ruane stated that the material was delivered and that we are waiting on the weather to cooperate. The replacement of the existing sidewalk in front of the Community Center and basketball court was approved. Council approved a quote for $8500 to tear up, widen and pour a new sidewalk that will run the approximately 200 feet. Also addressed was the concern for the condition of the old laundromat on Main Street. Mark Bilik, who’s home neighbors the vacant property expressed his concern and frustration with the deteriorating condition of the vacant property. Borough Ordinances addressing dilapidated and vacant properties, prior to the current council, were either not updated or not in place at all. Borough council recently updated and introduced new ordinances, giving code enforcement more authority as well as an increase in fines, now being enforced. With regard to the vacant laundromat on West Main Street, the code enforcement officer has issued the second citation to the property owner. The owner has until the end of June to address the issues. The Borough Council met this evening and covered a wide range of topics including revisions to four ordinances, budget considerations and scheduling of Halloween events. With regard to Halloween events, this years annual borough parade, regrettably, was canceled by council. With the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the surrounding areas combined with the beginning of flu season, council voted 3-1 with one abstention to err on the side of caution and not sponsor the eve...nt. Trick or Treating, however, is still on from 6:00pm - 8:00 pm. Budget considerations for children’s play equipment for the park, holiday decorations and replacing street signs were mentioned. Changes to nuisance ordinances, lesser ordinances, grass and vegetation ordinance and time frames for a fireworks ordinances were approved. These ordinances will be advertised prior to final approval.
