Last weekend we put a new cover on the greenhouse. After doing a bunch of research we chose Solawrap as it's been in use in Europe for 30+ years and has some unique properties. Quoting info from the company's website: "SolaWrap is on par for insulation with triple wall polycarbonate (which cannot be applied to hoop houses due to it’s rigid nature), as well as 83% light transmission and 83% light diffusion. This amount of light will allow your plants to grow at a faster rate.... Clients using SolaWrap greenhouse plastic in the Mediterranean have reported a 3 week advancement of tomato crops in structures covered with SolaWrap when compared to structures covered in other forms of polyethylene. Plants flourish under diffused light. Only SolaWrap provides high light transmission, high light diffusion, and high insulation (R value of 1.7) The longevity (has been on some greenhouses for close to 30 years without the need to replace) and the insulation value were big considerations for us. The last two days it has been very hot here.....86 degrees and the temp in the greenhouse never exceeded 93. As soon as we had a couple strips installed, I could tell that it diffused the light as their was a soft glow inside the greenhouse instead of the harsh light of summer. Many greenhouse customers have commented that they have not needed to use shadecloth when they put Solawrap on. Here are some of the other attributes:120 lbs per square foot snow load rating (approx 15 feet of snow) 100 mph wind rating (has survived 135 mph windstorms in Alaska) Full UV Degradation warranty of 10 years (better warranty than polycarbonate) Has been shown to last up to 27 years on greenhouses in Europe Does not yellow or get brittle Flexible so it can be rolled up inside wall curtains More cost efficient than polycarbonate Each roll is date stamped so you know exactly when the product was produced (nice when you try to remember "what year you replaced the plastic on the greenhouse".)
