Here's some food for thought about tonight's wintry mix: The difference between rain, freezing rain & sleet is very narrow. If your car thermometer is near o...r <32F, rain may create black ice on roads and sidewalks. If you hear pinging, that's a good sign: sleet is better than ice, though sleet can still make roads slippery! Take it slow in ice and snow through Friday morning. #PAwx See more

As we prepare for the arrival of wintry precipitation, the biggest remaining question is: HOW MUCH FREEZING RAIN WILL OCCUR? Please read the entire post! It's... all about the depth of the cold layer. Deeper layer of cold air = sleet; shallower layer of cold air = freezing rain. SO WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? At least a glaze of ice is expected everywhere except far northern PA 0.10"+ is likely through the Central Mountains Rain won't change to freezing rain until Friday morning in SE PA, where only light accumulation is expected. WHERE ARE THE HIGHEST ICE AMOUNTS EXPECTED TO OCCUR? Higher elevations and... Along a narrow corridor where 0.25"+ of ice is possible (third image) Don't focus on values as much as colors - higher potential in darker pink areas Isolated power outages possible
