Going to bed this Mother’s Day with a heart full of gratitude for the woman who taught me how to be a mother and the little girl who made me a mother. Flashback to ~7 years ago: I had been making candles as a hobby. It was just for fun; I gave them away to friends and family. Then shortly after Amelia was born I learned about a local farmers’ market that was interested in a candle booth. I was a brand new (accidental ) mom who quit bartending and nursing school to stay h...ome with Amelia. We were on a shoestring budget. To participate in the farmers’ market, I needed to buy about $400 worth of supplies to make enough candles for the season. I was TERRIFIED to spend that money. The supplies sat in my cart for a week and I agonized over that decision. It felt selfish and irresponsible. I called my mom to get her opinion and she told me that I would always wonder what if if I didn’t take the chance and that I should bet on myself. I know that all the trouble of 2020 won't magically vanish at the stroke of midnight. The past year was marked by chaos, tragedy, loss, and fear. But as we approach midnight there are still things about this year to celebrate: we witnessed a huge social movement for racial justice; voted in a new administration; and the tireless work of doctors and scientists has come to fruition with vaccines on the horizon. It's worth celebrating the strength and bravery it took to navigat...e what was the most difficult year of many of our lives. This candle is symbolic of my optimism that our 20s might yet roar, blending champagne - the quintessential drink of celebration, and pear - a traditional symbol of comfort. So cheers to a brighter and more comfortable New Year. Onward!
