This is our last post about Metacognition for the week, I hope you enjoy it and find value. Would love to know what you do to help you study/learn/write. For pe...ople that use readers... 1st image with blue background with a green bookshelf on the top of the image. In the middle of the image is a pink brain with orange and yellow stars trailing it. In the bottom corner is an outline of a person in yellow with a puzzling look and a question mark over their head. At the bottom of the image is an arrow. Image is labeled Metacognition subtitle Thinking about what you know and understand. Every slide is labeled @SensingGreatness 2nd image with blue background In the 1970's John Flavell, a psychologist conceived the concept of metacognition. In a previous post, I mentioned "metacognition" and how it can help students that struggle with word retrieval. However, metacognition is something that can help with nearly all aspects of daily life and schooling. It is a tool used that allows students to increase their knowledge and understanding while also allowing students to be more independent thinkers The importance of metacognitive learning is to help students apply the knowledge that they just learned. Metacognition allows students to think about what they know, what they don’t know, and how they are learning. 3rd image with blue background Titled Studying and Metacognition Have students use resources that are provided effectively, help to ensure accuracy. Students can group thoughts and think of questions to ponder to grow their understanding of the topic/subject. Students should think about what questions might be on the exam. Use all available resources that may help them to study, including, notes from class, any practice exam questions, textbook readings, and sections that were highlighted during class, go to study groups, and school or private tutoring. After they collect all the resources they write down why each resource would be useful and how to use it. By doing this they are effectively mapping out a study plan. 4th image with blue background Titled Writing and Metacognition If you want students to improve their writing skills it is important to give them appropriate instruction which includes 1) Planning about their writing 2) Observing their writing 3) Thinking about their writing By doing those things they can learn to evaluate their own work. This is important because this helps the student to become more independent, which can foster their eagerness to learn and feel empowered as they continue to learn new material. 5th image with blue background Titled References Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning. Did you know that experiencing a debilitating sense of anxiety when criticizes/rejected is called Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). RSD is an extreme (dyspho...ria means difficult to bear) emotional reaction to the perception of rejection, failure, or criticism regardless of the circumstantial reality. It's one of the very common, but often missed symptoms of ADHD and Autism. Former American High School teacher Erin Gruwell was told by the school she taught at that her class of underprivileged and underperforming kids would never rea...d a book from cover to cover because they were too stupid. However, her unique teaching method inspired the 150 students that came through her classroom to re-think the limiting beliefs they had about themselves and others, reconsider the decisions they made and ultimately changed the course of their lives forever.
