Burning bush and Japanese barberry maybe stunning in your garden with the brilliant flame red and deep burgundy leaves, but these two are extremely invasive. They look so pretty in my garden how can they possibly be invasive? Both shrubs produce berries that birds eat. The birds are then depositing those seeds (aka pooping) in our woodlands and forests. Those plants then take over and choke out the native plants that birds and other forest creatures need for nourishment and habitat. In honor of Earth Day, the Olde Oregon Farmhouse is going native! Last fall, a Pennsylvania master natural habitat steward from the Lancaster Conservancy condu...cted an evaluation of the property to identify any native plants and also the plants that are harmful to the environment. We will be removing many plants that are invasive or toxic to the pollinators, birds and butterflies. Already removed- butterfly bushes, Japanese barberry and some ornamental grasses. Lots of work, but we will continue to reach our goal. Stay tuned for more updates and information. #oldeoregonfarmhouse #villageoforegon #lancasterconservancy #nativeplants #pennstateextension See more
