Friends, As you may already know, PA State System Chancellor Dan Greenstein has directed that "the suspension of in-person classes across Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities, and all in-person learning experiences, including clinical rotations, internships, student teaching and field trips" will continue through the summer 2020 session as a public safety measure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the Old Stone House is owned by Slippery Rock University and staff...ed by SRU students, this means we will not open for the Summer 2020 season. As disappointing as this is, it also provides an opportunity for pausing to reflect and evaluate how we can best serve the community in new ways once the period of "social distancing" comes to an end. We wish you all good health, and look forward to the future when the house can once again be a place of connection, learning, and fun.
Visitors tour the Old Stone House during "Pioneer Crafts Day" August 1983 - also the 20th anniversary of the original groundbreaking for the reconstruction of the Old Stone House! #FlashbackFriday

Just a few snapshots from Early American Day this past Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came out - it was a lot of fun!
There are many things we believe about "way back when" that turn out not to be true! For example, "everybody knows" that women in colonial and 19th century America married very young - often as young as 16 or 17 years old, right? Except, it's not true...in colonial America, the average age of women at first marriage was around 21 or 22, with men averaging about 25.... Want to know more? Come check out our "Historical Mythbusters" displays as part of Early American Day this Saturday from 10-5!
Wow! Over 500 people are interested in Early American Day! It only takes one small click to commit to coming! All are welcome!

THIS WAS FUN! A curious and talented group, they rolled with all that was the Full Sourdough Immersion Experience today at Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustain...able Systems Education and Research and The Old Stone House. Best questions I have been asked so far in a bread class. Frank B. NAILED the "phloop", first try! Thanks to Old Stone House volunteers Sam & Stacy & son for tending the fire in the outdoor oven and conducting a history-centric tour of the building. Thanks also to Dr Eric Pallant (second from right) for sharing his expertise in all things sourdough. See more
There are still a few spots left for the Macoskey Center's Sourdough Bread baking class this Saturday from 9am - 3pm. The morning portion of the course will be taught at the Macoskey Center, while the afternoon portion will involve baking sourdough in the Old Stone House's historically-authentic beehive oven! Contact the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research ASAP to save your spot!

"The situation most advantageous for a tavern..." Found this gem today while researching something else entirely, from the "Land for Sale" section of the Pittsburgh Weekly Gazette, October 18, 1809. This is the property on which John Brown of Oliver would later build the Stone House!

#WayBackWednesday - The Old Stone House was built in 1822 as a sort of "pit-stop" for travelers using the new roadway that traveled from Erie to Pittsburgh. Thi...s photo is from the unveiling of the Old Stone House's sign in 1983 when Slippery Rock State College took over the operation and management of the house. See more
Our 1840s C. & L. Ives mantel clock is going in for some much-needed repair and maintenance. We're confident it is in good hands with horologist Dorrin Mace of Pine Knoll Clock Shop!
The "Mysterious Lady" of the Old Stone House... This small statuette was uncovered recently, buried in the ground near the house. Though it looks like bronze or copper, it is actually made of lead! We are still trying to assess its age and purpose. Our current best guess is that it was an elaborate cane handle (the base is hollow) What do you think?
Check out just a few pictures from our morning hosting the Model T Ford Club International group, who just wrapped up a week-long tour of Butler County with a stop at the Old Stone House!. Our parking lot was filled with plenty of these timeless vehicles, and more than 300 visitors toured the house! We had the chance to meet people from all over the country, and we hope they enjoyed their tour just as much as we enjoyed having them! Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau
Imagine our surprise when we were greeted by many car horns and beautiful clothing this afternoon. It just goes to show you'll never know what an afternoon at the Old Stone House will bring! Congratulations to the happy couple!
At the Old Stone House, we really enjoy multipurpose pieces! This piece of furniture double functions as both a table or a chair depending on the need. Come check us out to hear more about what we have at the House.
Here's to wishing you, your loved ones, and those who have served or are currently serving in our military a Happy 4th of July! We'll be back on Saturday morning and would love for you to spend your holiday weekend with us.
Take a look at this 1975 article about the Old Stone House we had the pleasure of finding today. A huge thank you to our friends in the SRU art department for giving it to us. Happy reading!

A little (late) spring cleaning this past Wednesday at the Stone House! Volunteers and SRU students organized, cleaned, swept, raked, polished and generally got the house ready to go for the season. Thanks to the team for all their work. Come see us on Saturday!
Just a reminder that our first big event of the summer kicks off next Saturday, June 9th. We'd love to see you at our Early American Day. Also, THIS Saturday (June 2) marks the beginning of our summer season at the Old Stone House. We'll be open beginning at 10:00am for tours.
Hello friends - due to some major repairs to the basement of the house during the offseason, and other work going on on the property, we are starting our open season late this year. We'll kick off the Summer 2018 season on Saturday, June 2 - and please join us on Saturday, June 9 for our Early American Day!
Come check out our Stitches in Time: Historic and Contemporary Textiles opening TOMORROW at the house!
If you've seen the equipment in our parking lot and wondered what's happening at the house, here's an up-close view! The house's 50+ year old drains had failed, leaving standing water in the basement on a regular basis. Once the walls are sealed and new drains complete, we should be all set. This should NOT interfere with the Christmas Open House Dec. 9 & 10.
Come celebrate the yuletide from an early-American perspective during The Old Stone House's annual Christmas Open House on December 9&10 from 4pm to 9pm.
There will be more than just old stones hanging around this house Oct. 28 as ghostly tales will be shared for the thrill and fright of one and all.
Looking forward to hosting The Miracle Elixir Side Show at Spooky Stories event on October 28. Their act alone is worth the price of admission! https://youtu.be/TcGQ6kSZtvM?t=6m36s
There is still space for anyone who wants to join us on Wednesday, Oct 11 at 4:00 pm at the Old Stone House for our book discussion of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. ...
