Your non-skating friends (and maybe you) might be surprised that skating was/is a part of the Civil Rights movement. On 27 August 1963 Ledger Smith set off fro...m Chicago and made his way to join Martin Luther King’s March on Washington. He didn’t take a bus or a train and he didn’t drive he made his way on rollerskates. There’s more to this story and too little space here, but I’m proud that I’m part of an industry and sport that has more significance than Disco and children’s birthday parties.

NATIONAL ROLLERSKATING MONTH DAY 19 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in 1937’s Shall We Dance... The scene where Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance on roller skates took about 150 takes, according to one of the VHS versions of the film. At the end of the roller skate dance number in the park the stars flop onto the "lawn". In the film both Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers appear uncomfortable as they get up. This is because both were bruised from more than fifteen earlier takes and were actually in pain.
