Progress on the medical clinic in Angostura continues! This past week the outside of the clinic was beautifully painted with the ondawave, @foodforthepoor, and @caritas logos. Inside, the clinic is stocked with medicine, medical equipment, hospital beds, and furniture. We are still waiting to be officially approved as a clinic as the Dominican government is working to circulate COVID vaccines throughout the country. There’s a lot happening in the world, and yet at the same time, life can feel somewhat slow. Around the globe, everyone is adjusting to the current situation, just as we are in the United States. Above are some updates on conditions in the Dominican Republic and Angostura. Ian and Isabel have safely returned to the United States and we continue to stay in touch with the community. Even though work looks different for everyone right now, we are eager to continue our progress and stay connected. Ian and Isabel will return to the United States this week, but not without alerting our friends in Angostura and the surrounding area. Despite the challenge of remote work in another country, we will continue to push for as much progress as possible. We are resolved in our desire to complete the medical clinic in Angostura. #ondawave #dominicanrepublic

Today Isabel and Ian met with Ariel, one of the community members of Angostura that will certainly benefit from the clinic. Ariel has arthritis, causing challenges with mobility, so making the journey out of Angostura for medical care is tough. Fortunately the medical clinic is situated right up the road from Ariel's house where he lives with his wife and two of his kids. Ariel's health challenges don't prevent him from contributing to his community. He has such a strong, p...ositive spirit apparent in every conversation we have with him. For work, he helps coordinate a government program that benefits about 100 Angosturans in obtaining food, electricity, and school funds. He will soon also be teaching other community members to read and write as part of a program sponsored by the Dominican government. He is also currently helping to coordinate the efforts of Blue Missions Group in Angostura. He is excited for the clinic to ease the process of him and his fellow Angosturans in accessing medical care. See more

Today Yonny left Angostura on a motorcycle for his second day of class to become a Pharmacy Technician. Yonny owns a variety store in Angostura. It is not quite the same as one you would see in the US. His small one-room store has everything from pre-packaged snacks to pvc pipe. Since Angostura is so small and removed from major traffic, theft is not a major concern. His store sits open in the front room of his house as he cooks, cleans, and looks after his 3 year old son, Jake. When he's needed in the store he'll hear a familiar voice bellow "Yonny" into the window of his house. A few moments will pass and Yonny will come up to the counter ready to make a sale. When Yonny has his hands full with his very energetic child, his neighbors will step in and help take care of a customer.
