Today’s student cares more about getting the work done than getting it right. If you observe your child completing a math assignment and no work is shown, have them start all over and make them show, prove, or explain why their answers are correct. #Math #Reading #Homeschool #Educationaltesting #tutoring

Teach your children what these words mean. Point out that they already use these skills on a daily basis outside of school. Give them examples of when they use the above in their own world. Knowing these words will help them with reading comprehension. #reading #math #writing #tutoring #homeschool

Post-pandemic, should every student move up to the next grade? In North Carolina, Guilford County Schools, where course failure rates soared during the coronavirus pandemic, is offering middle and high school students the chance to take a fifth semester during the summer to improve failing grades. New York City, the nation’s largest school system, is also allowing middle and high school students to finish work after the term ends to earn a passing grade. (New York says, how...ever, that it will still hold some students back if they have not made enough progress to be ready for the next grade level.) And Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the country’s fourth-largest district, provided written notification in January to parents of students in remote learning who were not making adequate progress; while the district didn’t require parents to enroll their children in-person, parents had to acknowledge receiving the information if they wanted their children to continue learning remotely. Since then, the district has offered those students tutoring before or after school, as well as instruction on Saturdays, or over winter and spring breaks. It is also offering an expanded and enriched summer program. Credit: NY Times

Continuation of previous post: Below are examples of how parents can hinder a child’s critical thinking development: You prevent your child from exploring and stretching his abilities (e.g. your child climbs a tree (or anything), you run over and tell them to not do that).... In toddlerhood, you might constantly shadow your child, always playing with and directing his behavior, allowing them no alone time. In elementary school, you ensure your child has a certain teacher or coach, selecting the child’s friends and activities. You monitor and control their homework, providing disproportionate assistance for homework and school projects. You shield them from failure, if they fail then you pull your weight to change that. You do for your child what he/she can actually do for herself. You influence your child to work as per your ambitions. You negotiate your child’s conflicts. You do their academic works or get overly involved. You train your child’s trainers, telling them how to do things differently for your child. You hold the responsibility for all your child’s house chores. You don’t allow them to tackle their problems. You don’t allow them to make age appropriate choices. All the above could cause long term consequences such as underdevelopment of the brain. Credit: Internationalschoolparent.com

75 percent of employers claim students they hire after 12, 16 or more years of formal education lack the ability to think critically and solve problems..despite the fact that nearly all educators claim to prioritize helping students develop critical thinking skills. -Inside Higher Ed As an educator, the same dynamic is observed in the classroom where students struggle with anything that involves critical thinking and/or problem solving. This issue has led us to ask the question, are some parenting styles more conducive to raising critical thinkers than others? Are today’s parenting styles hindering critical thinking/problem solving in students? #reading #writing #math #tutoring #homeschool #educationaltesting

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus characterthat is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reading Vocabulary plays an important role in word recognition. Beginning readers use knowledge of words from speech to recognize words that they encounter in print. When children ‘sound out’ a word, their brain is working hard to connect the pronunciation of a sequence of sounds to a word in their vocabulary. If they find a match between the word on the page and a word in they have learned through listening and speaking, and it makes sense to them, they will keep reading. If a match is not created, because the word they are reading is not found in their vocabulary, comprehension is interrupted. This is the case even if they are able to generate the correct pronunciation through the decoding process. Credit: Reading Horizons

Simply in words heard, the average child on welfare was having half as much experience per hour (616 words per hour) as the average working-class child (1,251 words per hour) and less than one-third that of the average child in a professional family (2,153 words per hour) (Hart & Risley 2003, 8). This is important because vocabulary development during the preschool years is related to later reading skills and school success in general. Credit: The Word Gap: Early Years Make a Difference

Does your child do one or all of the following: 1. Unresponsive to math questions and seems disengaged. 2. Unable to complete math tasks (word problems) that are heavy on written instruction. 3. Does not display knowledge and understanding in math TESTS.... If the above applies, then this may be due to the lack of understanding math terminology. Understanding the language of math is extremely important. It’s hard to understand a mechanic if you have no basic understanding of car/mechanic terms. It’s difficult to understand a realtor if you have no basic understanding of real estate terminology. It’s hard to understand sports if you have no basic understanding of sports terminology. Well, math is the same way. Students need to understand math terms if they want to be fluent with mathematics and have a better grasp of math concepts. Create a math dictionary for your child. Pay attention to the skill your child is learning in school and have them add all terms associated with the skill to their math dictionary.
