Good morning Mayhemmers It's my pleasure to introduce you to today's guest Selina from @selinaam05 Who is way better at Sashiko than me. Selina is also tod...ay's guest on @seworganisedstyle podcast so you can listen to her talking to Maria @velosews Enjoy reading. Hi, I am Selina from @selinaam05 I feel honored to have this opportunity to share a short story with you about who I am and what I do. I am a textile product developer living in Amsterdam with my husband, son and two cats. I love handcraft, Sashiko pattern design and visible mending. I moved to Amsterdam from China to study some time ago. During my study I started an internship at a fashion agency, who later arranged a technical immigrant working permit for me. Since then I started my new journey in the Netherlands. I grew up in China in the 80’s when most home textiles were still hand sewn. I learnt hand stitching from my grandma, a hardworking farm lady who made quilts and winter clothes by hand for the whole family. Just imagine how much work it was since she has 8 children! As a child, I was always busy with drawing, cutting paper, sewing scrap fabrics and creating fancy hairstyles for my sister. I made small gifts and cards for friends’ birthdays by myself. But somehow I stopped crafting due to the busy schedule of study, and later of work and family life. It was during the lockdown in April, when I finally had more time on hand, I started to pick up the parked crafting skills. With old pillows and scrap fabrics, I hand stitched a denim poef (shown on 6th photo). Inspired by the gorgeous works from @lindezeanne, I made many boro brooches. And after getting to know Sashiko from the Youtube channel of @sashi.co and the book The Ultimate Sashiko Source Book written by Susan Briscoe, I settled with Sashiko because the stitching process always calms me down and brings my focus back whenever it is going away. I started to design new Sashiko patterns somewhere in June when I was searching for cute animal patterns to stitch on the bib for my friend’s newborn baby, but could not find anything. My first design is a cat repeat pattern which remains my personal favorite. The designing process is so much fun that before I realized, I have already designed 17 animal patterns in a short period of less than 4 months. You can find most samplers on the 1st photo. Later I also invented negative space Sashiko technique (most samplers shown on the 2nd photo) and exercised many traditional Sashiko patterns in Susan’s book (samplers shown on the 3rd photo). In addition to Sashiko, I also love mending. Mending to me is a part of the path for a more sustainable living. Working as a textile product developer for many years, I am strongly against throwing away textiles as I know exactly how much effort and energy it takes to produce a single piece of textile item. My goal of mending is to retain the original character of the item as much as possible and keep the mend subtle. My favorite mend is done on the collar and cuffs of a white shirt (shown on 4th photo). Although the mend is visible, the shirt remains formal and can still be worn to the office. It is the same story when it comes to denim mend, I try to keep the mend laidback so that it does not make the denim too busy (shown on 5th photo). I do not have mending projects running at the moment. I hope to practice more when I find more items to mend after a complete closet cleanup in the coming days. I feel so lucky that along the way of learning and sharing Sashiko and mending works on Instagram, I get to know many wonderful people including you in this cozy needlecraft community. I appreciate your amazing works, encouragement and support, and hope we can stay connected, creative and inspiring each other.
