In this weeks before and after photos we present a young woman who underwent direct to implant nipple sparing mastectomy secondary to her genetic susceptibility. Her age in the mid 20's and her natural breast shape and nipple/areola position, made her a perfect candidate for a nipple sparing direct to implant approach. She came to O'Toole Plastic Surgery after discovering she had the BRCA 2 gene, making her at far greater risk to develop breast cancer. She has an extremel...y strong family history of breast cancer including her mother, a breast cancer survivor. She has additional family members on both sides who have tested positive for the BRCA 2 gene and had various cancers. The tumor suppressor BRCA 2 gene makes a person far more susceptible to developing breast, ovarian and additional cancers in their lifetime. It is one of a host of known genes increasing a woman's lifetime risk of breast and other cancers. She had to make one of the most important and toughest decisions of her young adult life. Fortunately, she has a great support network including her mother, extended family and members of FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered). #brca2 #brca2positive #breastcancerawareness #breastreconstruction #otooleplasticsurgery #ops #focusedonyoualways

For this weeks breast cancer survivor series we’re providing an example of what a woman could expect after completing bilateral nipple sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction with fat grafting. This woman came to Dr. O’Toole after being diagnosed with breast cancer and being told a good cosmetic outcome was not feasible in her situation. She wanted a second opinion to see which options existed for her unique /individual breast experience.... She previously had cosmetic breast implants which were ultimately removed at the time of mastectomy and replaced with a reconstructed fold and new, larger silicone breast implants via a short vertical scar approach. She had fat grafting as well to fine-tune results. To this day, she remains elated with her results and is pleased she was able to obtain the best possible cosmetic outcome with the least amount of scarring.

For this weeks Breast Cancer Awareness Series Video, we are highlighting this powerful patient's experience with the BRCA 2 genetic diagnoses/one of the many genes that makes a person more likely to develop breast cancer. She is resolute and honored to share her wisdom with anyone who may be going through a similar situation. ... Simply being kind to one another has never been of more importance than present day. However, she reminds us it is critical "to be kind to yourself through the process." Her congenial, relatable nature makes it feel as though you've known her for years. #BRCAgene #otooleplasticsurgery #ops #focusedonyoualways #breastcancerawarenessmonth

This week in our breast cancer cancer survivor series we wanted to provide and example of what to expect after completing a total mastectomy with breast reconstruction. This particular patient opted for tissue expander insertion followed by implant placement with fat grafting to further enhance her results. Scars are vertical and strategically located on the lower portion on her breasts to limit her ability to see them as much as possible and to provide a more natural conto...ur compared to traditional incision patterns. There are many options when it comes to breast reconstruction and revision and we are here to help all survivors find what is the best option for them. She was happy to allow her pictures to be shown in the hopes it could help another in their journey. #breastcancerawarenessmonth #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersurvivor #otooleplasticsurgery #ops #focusedonyoualways #pinkforoctober
