So you shopped till you dropped this weekend? Whew! After a hectic day - when the lure of the drive-thru is most magnetic - your metabolism tanks, says a new study. Stressed women who ate a meal with 930 calories and 60 g of fat (similar to a fast-food combo meal) burned 104 fewer calories than those who ate the same meal but hadn't recently endured a big stressor. Stress elevates cortisol, which drives you to eat more high-calorie food. Avoid the trap altogether by - first of all - eliminating holiday stressors and by giving yourself access to healthy options. Grab a clementine before a cookie!

5 Top Flu-Fighting and Cold-Crushing Foods Come winter (and we're certainly experiencing winter-like temperatures), your diet can determine whether you'll end up bedridden with a cold or the flu. Stave off seasonal illness with these immunity-boosting foods. KEFIR... A cultured milk product similar to yogurt, kefir is loaded with probiotics, the healthy bacteria that live in your gut - where most of your immune cells dwell - and help you absorb nutrients to keep your immune system solid. Blend one cup with fruit and drink it like a smoothie. RED GRAPEFRUIT Vitamin C can shorten colds while alleviating symptoms. Eating just one red grapefruit will satisfy your needs. SWEET POTATO Root veggies are brimming with vitamin A, which helps the body produce white blood cells that fight bacteria and viruses. They also maintain mucosal membranes in the nose and throat to prevent infections from gaining a foothold in your body. Prick the skin of the potato with a fork and bake for 45 minutes at 400 degrees. CINNAMON One teaspoon has the same amount of disease-fighting antioxidants as half a cup of blueberries. And it's a versatile spice. Use it to flavor tea or coffee, cereal, smoothies, or vanilla ice cream. OYSTERS Thanks to high levels of zinc, the pneumonia and cold-proofing powers of oysters are top-notch. But the two most common ways of eating them - fried or raw in the half-shell - will raise your cholesterol and could expose you to food-borne illnesses. Instead, shuck them and broil with some minced parsley, garlic, and olive oil for about five minutes. See more

It's December! Here's a fun fact about our favorite holiday plant: Poinsettias bloom in November and December, so technically, they should be available both months. Their holiday ties date back to a Mexican legend, which describes the plants as miraculously turning red on Christmas Eve. In keeping with the tradition, they're sold only during the holiday.

Find Comfort Using the 3 Ts - Temperature, Touch, and (Other Relaxation) Techniques Welcome back! Touch... - Experiment with therapeutic massage; professional or at home. - Explore the benefits of intimacy. - Pet your cat, enjoy a hug. And other relaxation techniques - Diaphragmatic breath - Meditation - Hypnosis/self-hypnosis - Guided imagery - Biofeedback - Body scan/Progressive muscle relaxation. Do a mental scan of your body and focus on areas with the most tension, unclenching your jaw, for example, and allowing yourself to relax. - Belly laughter. Laughter releases endorphins, relaxes the body, and promotes a sense of well-being. - Small smile. Facial expressions not only signal moods but also affect them. When we hurt, it would be unreasonable to force a broad, inauthentic grin, so try allowing your whole face and jaw to relax and then gently inducing a half-smile. Living well with chronic pain is difficult. Try some or all of these techniques to determine what works best for you. Carefully observe the results and incorporate them into your daily life. You'll be glad you did!

Find Comfort Using the 3 Ts - Temperature, Touch, and (Other Relaxation) Techniques Whether you have chronic or acute pain, it is essential to find what soothes you. Step 1: Identify strategies that decrease pain and improve comfort. ... Step 2: Commit to using them to add comfort to your day. This may sound simple. However, prioritizing your comfort and withholding judgmental thoughts that may stand in the way of focusing on yourself are often difficult to do. It may help to remember that investing in self care can enhance your comfort, attitude and abilities. Below are a sampling of strategies that promote relaxation and well-being and can reduce pain. Try them out. Track their effectiveness. See what helps you, and speak with your doctor as needed. Temperature - Relax in warm water (bathtub, hot tub, whirlpool, etc) - Heat (heating pads, heat sacks, or hot water bottles) Try lying on a heated water bag or cuddle in a heated blanket, or use seat warmers at home, in your car, even at a soccer game or in a hammock. - Use hot/cold packs to alternate between temperatures. (Cold can function as a local anesthetic, numbing sore tissue and slowing nerve impulses.) - Try an ice massage on painful areas. Tomorrow, we'll address Touch and Other Relaxation Techniques, so come on back for more!
