On October 10-11, the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) hosted their first-ever 5K run to benefit the PCOM Hearts Student-Run Clinics, located throughout the Philadelphia area. To ensure participant safety, the event was hosted virtually. Forty-three runners, made up of PCOM students and community members, raised a total of $620. This total was matched by SOMA, making the donation amount $1,240. While we originally planned to do this run in-person, the coronavirus pandemic pushed us to do it virtually. We wanted to use this run as an opportunity to raise funds for the student-run clinics that are in need right now." - Brenda Tester (DO ’23), treasurer and secretary of SOMA. In light of National Health Education Week, celebrated October 19 - 23, we enlisted the help of a few notable faculty members across PCOM campuses to share why ...they are passionate about educating future healthcare professionals. I was an educator before becoming a physical therapist. While my clinical work has opened many doors for me, being a physical therapist has ultimately brought my teaching into clearer focus, says Philip A. Fabrizio, PT, DPT, EdD, associate professor of physical therapy at PCOM Georgia. My teaching role has become more like a facilitator and personal role model exploring a variety of teaching and learning strategies with students as I guide them into our profession. And as a facilitator, I think I can take an equal amount of pride in the success of each student, because ultimately they teach me as much as I teach them. #NHEW2020 #ChoosePT

"While not a common cause of toxicity in young children in the U.S., when it does occur, PCP intoxication puts young children at risk for serious injury. Current literature gives only a vague understanding of how children under the age of 5 become intoxicated with PCP and what clinicians should look for when evaluating a pediatric patient to indicate PCP toxicity." Hilary Gray (DO '22) is our October Student Research Spotlight! Ms. Gray shares her experience researching data in hopes of aiding physicians in their efforts to recognize and provide care for pediatric patients who’ve been exposed to phenylcyclohexyl piperidine (PCP). In light of National Health Education Week (NHEW), celebrated October 19 - 23, we enlisted the help of a few notable faculty members across PCOM campuses to share why they are passionate about educating future healthcare professionals. Educating and mentoring PCOM students is one of my greatest joys, says Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Jason Kaplan, DO, FACC, clinical assistant professor of internal medicine, division of cardiology. PCOM students have stro...ng educational backgrounds and are eager to learn; it is my job to help mold them into excellent, well-rounded clinicians and scientists. For me, it makes it all worthwhile when everything I have taught them comes togetherwhen they are able to answer the tough questions, when they read the complicated articles on their own to further understand complex topics, and when they truly enjoy what they are doing. It is during these moments that I measure my success as an educator, because once they have made it to this point, being a great doctor is usually just a matter of time. #NHEW2020 See more

"I wear a mask because I want to ensure the safety of all those around me on campus and in my community, specifically those who may be at high risk for worse COVID outcomes and complications. Wearing a mask is a small courtesy with a large impact that makes Philadelphia safer and healthier." -Darya Enlow (DO '24)
