The past year has been tough as many kids had to deal with cancellations, disruptions, adapting to remote learning, and the uncertainty of the pandemic. They may even now feel more anxiety as things start to open up. Here’s how families can encourage optimism in children and help them manage difficult emotions. Model coping skills. Talk to kids about how you deal with stress and disappointment, and help them build toolkits of their own (favorite music, calming activities, calls with loved ones) to get through tough moments. Remember, kids are resilient. Know that this experience is helping them build coping skills for the future. #pediatrics #pediatrician #mentalhealthawarenessmonth

New guidance from CDC says people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer need to wear masks in most cases. But here's what to keep in mind for unvaccinated children in the family. "Currently, there is no COVID vaccine for kids under age 12. Which means masks are still an important way to protect them. And since unvaccinated children can still transmit the virus to others, mask wearing protects others as well. Parents, if you are vaccinated and your children are ...not, you can choose to go without a mask. But you could also choose to model mask-wearing behavior in support of your children when you are all out together. For example, everyone can wear masks for a trip to the grocery store." #pediatrics #pediatrician #healthychildren

It's National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. If your child has or you suspect they have allergies, we recommend following these 7 tips! You can call our office and schedule an appointment to discuss evaluation and treatment. "Knowing what your child is allergic to can be an important step in finding the right treatment. Allergy testing should be performed to determine whether your child is allergic to any environmental allergens. Nasal allergy symptoms can be caused by a variety of environmental allergens including indoor allergens such as dust mites, pets, and pests as well as outdoor allergens such as pollens. Molds, which can be found indoors and outdoors, can also trigger nasal allergy symptoms." #pediatrics #pediatrician #allergy #allergies #healthychildren

Distance learning can cause problems for kids' posture, neck pain, and repetitive stress injuries. You may notice that your child is experiencing discomfort from sitting at a computer for a long period of time, but many of these issues can progress slowly. We recommend following these tips to encourage your child to work in a neutral position if they're learning from home. "Ideally, children and adults alike should maintain a neutral posture while sitting at a computer, with... the spine not twisted or bent, the lower back supported and the neck straight. The work area should be well-lit with the monitor positioned at approximately arm’s-length and the top part of the screen comfortably at eye level." #pediatrics #pediatrician #parenting #distancelearning #remotelearning

You can still have a fun Halloween this year and stay safe from COVID-19. Here are more tips and ideas on how to celebrate with your family while following precautions. "Try a virtual (or socially distanced) Halloween costume contest, a crafting party or even just a hangout. Netflix viewing parties, game nights, and virtual haunted house tours or escape rooms may be more fun for tweens and teens. For more grown-up fun, this may be right up your alley." #pediatrics #pediatrician #COVID19 #Halloween

It's #ADHDAwarenessMonth. While it's normal for many kids to show signs of ADHD from time to time, a parent or caregiver should talk to a pediatrician if they're seeing the signs on a regular basis. Here's info to help better understand ADHD. If you have any concerns, please call our office to make an appointment with Dr. Poblete. "Effective treatment is available. If your child has ADHD, your pediatrician can offer a long-term treatment plan to help your child lead a happy ...and healthy life. As a parent, you have a very important role in this treatment. Left untreated, ADHD in some children will continue to cause serious, lifelong problems, such as poor grades in school, run-ins with the law, failed relationships, and the inability to keep a job." #pediatrics #pediatrician #ADHD #parenting

Halloween is always a fun time for dressing up in costumes and decorating pumpkins. This year's traditions may be different with the ongoing pandemic. However, there are still many ways for your family to have fun and stay safe! Check out the tips in this article. "Use video chats for an online party with friends and family and show off costumes and play games. Make some fun Halloween treats as a family. Decorate a pizza with toppings in the shape of a jack-o'-lantern, for ex...ample, or make tangerine pumpkins (peel the tangerine and stick a thin slice of celery on top to look like a stem). Make sure the treats are not choking hazards if you have children under age 3." #pediatrics #pediatrician #halloween

As the holidays are approaching, including Halloween next month, extra considerations should be taken in this year's celebrations to protect your family from COVID-19. Here are CDC's recommendations on holiday celebrations and travel and info on lower risk and higher risk activities. "Do not use a costume mask (such as for Halloween) as a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers your mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around your face. Do not wear a costume mask over a cloth mask because it can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask." #pediatrics #pediatrician #COVID19

For kids doing remote learning either partially or 100%, here are easy tips for creating a virtual learning space that will help your child stay focused and succeed! "Set up a designated learning space where your child can engage in both synchronous and asynchronous learning. This does not necessarily have to be a separate room if you have a smaller home (or multiple children), but defining the space will help your child associate it with the right mindset. For most children, their bedroom is not an ideal location for this space: there are too many distractions, and having gadgets such as computers or ipads in the room at night might tempt your child to stay up past bedtime." #pediatrics #pediatrician #parentingtips

Whether you returned to work or are working from home, planning for child care in this pandemic can be a challenge especially if your kids are doing distance learning or a hybrid. Here's some advice on planning child care during these uncertain times. "Parents are already master prioritizers, but in times of greater uncertainty, we need to protect the most important things no matter what. Make a list of all possible priorities in your family’s life. (To make it feel less daunting, focus on just the next quarter.) Then, pick the three that you want and need to protect most. This doesn’t mean that the others aren’t important, but just that anytime the top three are in jeopardy, the rest will have to take a backseat." #pediatrics #pediatrician #COVID19
