In a recent blog about the highly sensitive task faced by the India’s Empowered Expert Committee to select 20 institutions of eminence from the group of 114 applicants, AHEAD’s Matt Hartley and Alan Ruby, and Venkatesh Kumar from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, recommend using a transparent and objective assessment process and call on the committee to share a brief report with all applicant institutions and give them an opportunity to respond. This has an element of procedural fairness, they suggest, But, more importantly, it encourages the institution to be self-reflective, which, in turn, can lead to improvement regardless of the outcome of the application.
