Cardiothoracic surgery resident Jason Han wrote about the responsibility to wear a mask in public. The mindset I hope to carry in wearing masks as well as in taking care of my patients is to do that which I believe is right, not for any other reason than that it is the right thing to do. Dr. Luke Messac, GR'16, is featured on NBC News for receiving help with his undergraduate thesis from Dr. Anthony Fauci. Messac received his Ph.D. in History an...d Sociology of Science from Penn Arts & Sciences in 2016 and his M.D. from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. Dr. Messac is currently a Resident in Emergency Medicine at Brown University. "For a lot of us in medicine, [Dr. Fauci] is just such a major voice. He edits one the major medical textbooks, he’s had thousands of publications and he’s fought some of the worst diseases we have," Messac said. "A lot of people in medicine trust him, so hearing his voice was very comforting during a very scary time and still is." Tags: University of Pennsylvania, Penn Alumni

In a letter to the Penn Medicine community, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Dean J. Larry Jameson, University of Pennsylvania Heal...th System CEO Kevin B. Mahoney, and other leaders reinforced our institution’s values in the pursuit of justice, inclusion and equity, both in health care and in the broader society: As health care providers, scientists, and educators, we are in a position to lead. We have profound obligations to support diversity and inclusion within our communities to our patients, to our students and trainees, and importantly, to one another. In our words and through our actions, we have power to make a difference in the fight to ensure that hatred, bigotry, discrimination, and racism have no corner in our community. We understand the importance of social determinants as they relate to health, education, and wealth. We continue to strive to fully understand the unfortunate role of racism and biases in health care disparities, ostensibly immovable barriers to achieving equity in health. At Penn Medicine, our code of professionalism, our commitment to inclusion, and our focus on optimal health for everyone, underpins our values and actions. We stand together in this crucial work, and send our most heartfelt support and thoughts to those who are hurting today. Read more of their letter: http://spr.ly/6183G1pFB
