Dr. April Armstrong has been named chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine. Armstrong will assume the role on July 1, after serving as interim chair since July 2019.

Hershey Medical Center is the only site in Pennsylvania participating in a study to determine whether people who've previously experienced severe allergic reactions are at increased risk for an immediate, systemic allergic reaction to the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines. Fadia Kamal, a researcher from the Center for Orthopaedic Research and Translational Science found that a common anti-depressant may be able to slow cartilage breakdown and promote cartilage regeneration. The team is currently seeking approval from the FDA for a new trial of this drug to treat osteoarthritis, a disease affecting more than 30 million adults.
