Can you tell the temperature by listening to crickets? Yes! The snowy tree cricket is famous as the cricket whose song can be used to tell the temperature. As... explained in the Introduction, nearly all crickets and katydids make songs from which temperature can be calculated. However, in most cases, the elements that are linearly related to temperature and too rapid to be quantified by ear. The fame of the snowy tree cricket as a thermometer is based on the fact that it is a widespread, dooryard species that produces a countable chirp at a very regular rate. This allows the temperature at the calling cricket’s location to be easily estimated from the chirp rate. In the eastern United States, a simple formula for determining Fahrenheit temperature is to count the number of chirps in 13 s and add 41. Snowy tree crickets in the West call with a somewhat higher chirp rate. In Oregon, for example, count the number of chirps in 12 s and add 38. To use the closely related Riley’s tree cricket as a thermometer, count the number of chirps in 21 s and add 38.
