Thinking outside the box to find ways to help those in need: The Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs Baseball food drive, "The "Twelve Dawgs of Christmas". Any Dawg who brings a non- perishable food item to the Dawg Pound on or before Sunday December 13 can register to win 1 of 78 awesome prizes, including a DeMarini bat or a Wilson A2000 baseball glove. (You choose the model.) And with the new shutdowns imposed by The Governor today that extend through January 4th, now it is more important than ever to lend a hand. We will keep you posted as to the food banks that receive the donations and as to who the winners are. Let's show the world what being a part of The Dawgs' Family is all about.

Looking for a unique gift this Christmas? In between going to high school full time, volunteering at the local food bank and working two jobs, Catherine has created her very own Etsy store. She takes her old toys (and mine!) and turns them into one of a kind pieces of art. Nothing like the nostalgia of a childhood Christmas that those old toys can bring. Little toy soldiers. Or dinosaurs. Rubber animals. Or dolls. To wear. Or to share. It's just plain fun. Maybe she can even repurpose your own special toy into a one of a kind treasure. Check out her site to bring back some of that Christmas wonder...https://www.etsy.com/shop/RepurposedToys

Bednar is back, fastball hits 97 MPH: After 7 long months, Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs Baseball alum Will Bednar was back on the mound for Mississippi State University as they open their fall season. Bednar worked one perfect inning with 2 Ks in an intrasquad game. Shame to think some colleges have yet to return to the classroom, let alone the baseball field....

2020 College Scholarship and Commitment News: Marco Gambino becomes the 11th Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs Baseball alumn to commit to college in this most unusual recruiting season. At a time when college baseball has been continually put on hold and coaches are not allowed by some states, including Pennsylvania, to actively recruit players by either attending games or having students visit campus, this is a testament to the dedication and tenacity of both the players and the Dawg's leadership. Some believe it when they hear can't. Others ignore the bullshit and get the job done. Gambino, senior catcher at Thomas Jefferson High School (Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania), has turned it up both on the field last summer, this fall and in the weight room at the Dawg Pound. Working hard we can plow through this. Together!

Nothing, to me, is as sweet as the game of baseball in Autumn. When clear, sunny days give way to cool, crisp evenings. Magic time. Memories, so thick it becomes hard to tell where (or when) you are. Sitting on the front porch. With Pap (or dad or Uncle Joe) as he breaks out the transistor radio. Static. A bit of news, maybe. The weather report? And then, as if by magic, the voice of Bob Prince (or Vin Scully or Harey Caray) takes over the airwaves and for a few hours ...everything fades away and nothing else seems to matter. Being this, the first day of fall, go find an old transistor and a porch (and a Pap or dad or Uncle) and check out KDKA Radio Fm 93.7. Listen as Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs Baseball alumn Ian Happ and the Chicago Cubs take on the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight 7:05pm from PNC Park. I've done it, more this year than I'd like to admit, (can't stand the fakeness of the games on TV, (the cardboard fans, the pretend cheers). But the radio! Was there ever a game so created for that? Youth sports is about way more than a game. It is about learning how to win with dignity. And to lose with grace. It is about setting personal goals. (And team goals). It is about missing those goals (or achieving them), then setting new ones, always moving forward, learning from mistakes. Adapting. Having a plan, working hard, pain, sweat, joy. It is about overcoming the fear of failure. It is about being confident in one's abilities, never arrogant. (And learning... the subtle difference between the two). It is about friendship. And trust. With teammates and coaches (and parents). But first and foremost, it is about learning your place within a group, where you fit in. When to ask for help. When to figure it the hell out on your own. When to push. When to back off. When it is "me". When it is "us". It is about preparing, for growing. It is about life. As a man. Or a woman. For you. For your family. For society as a whole.
