Coming October 4th! Exquisite Copse at Palumbo Park Social distancing, fresh air, exercise - and real, physical art! After months of being cooped up, we now have a safe opportunity to return to the experience of three- dimensional visual art. As a part of the predominantly virtual Da Vinci Fest Live, Philadelphia Sculptors is presenting Exquisite Copse, a temporary show of outdoor sculptures in Palumbo Park in Philadelphia's Bella Vista neighborhood. From October 4 - November... 6, the park will be festooned with strange creations that pop out from the bushes, hang from the trees, and creep along the walkways. Twelve artists have been spending the pandemic creating new and curious artworks that will be in the spirit of da Vinci and some of the remarkable artists who came after him. A play on the Surrealists’ game Exquisite Corpse, where artists combined unrelated drawings into one larger one, Exquisite Copse will be a three-dimensional version installed near the trees and in the garden areas and walkways of the park. Each work was created independently, with the artists then collaborating in groups of three to connect their works and create new hybrid art forms. The participating artists are: Clifford Bailey, Ken Beidler, Patrick Cabry, David Deakin, Karen Izzi, Leslie Kaufman, Gregory Laut, Carole Loeffler, Rebecca Schultz, Bina Shah, Naomi Teppich, and Nina Valdera. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Due to the changing nature of the COVID 19 guidelines, we are not scheduling an opening reception, so come visit on your own any time, day or night. This is a real (not virtual!) outdoor exhibition with plenty of room to see art in a lovely open space. Palumbo Park is located at 723 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, adjacent to Fleisher Art Memorial. Visit our website for more information: https://philasculptors.org/exquisite-copse

Julia Levitina was born and raised in Odessa, Ukraine. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia, splitting her time between the United States and France. Levitina creates powerful and elegant figurative sculpture in bronze that aims to capture extraordinary in the ordinary. Her work strives to entice the feeling of awe as its creator searches for wisdom by way of wonder. Julia Levitina makes her own clay, molds, waxes, and does all subsequent casting a...nd finishing of her bronzes, including melting and pouring metal, in her Philadelphia studio. Levitina on art; "I think artist’s gift is two-fold: seeing extraordinary in the ordinary and communicating that sense of wonder by way of art. I am inspired, challenged, moved to my deepest core by the beauty present in ordinary existence. I strive to convey the awe I experience through my sculptures. Recurring themes in my work are a kind of a quest for wisdom, a nod to the disappearing old world, an attempt to resuscitate beauty. I try to capture everyday moments that are at once transient and transcendent, that may easily go unnoticed but that turn out to have universal significance when perceived. In today’s world, that so often places pragmatism over heart and values destination more than journey, it has never been more important to seek ways to return to a richer, deeper human experience. Art brings us nearer by offering a single most direct form of communication: from one human being to another. It is the highest form of hope." Vogel's Artist Statement; "I create imaginary landscapes and growths to investigate the effects of entropy on our environments. I transform the commonplace materials of porcelain, paper, and wire into unfamiliar forms and textures that evoke growth, decay, and the tenuousness of our surroundings. By referencing craft traditions and natural processes of dissolution, my work addresses aspects of existence on the edge of potential destruction. The physical and connotati...ve properties of my materials speak of the possibility of their demiseporcelain lattices defy their structural improbability to reflect their fragility back on the viewer; a wrinkled, skin-like coating of paper is stained and slowly decayed by its rusting steel wire skeleton. My work asserts the craft-based primacy of the handmade, grounding itself in the physical world on which we all, ultimately, rely." Vogel on her passion; In my studio work, I'm passionate about using physical metaphors to find clarity on emotionally charged subjects. Specifically, I’m interested in highlighting our interconnectedness and interdependence with our surroundings, both social and ecological. By making work on a human-or-larger scale, I hope to emphasize that, despite our technological innovations, we are not the preeminent beings we collectively assume ourselves to be. I believe that by trying to de-center our human experience in the decision-making processes that impact our environments and ecosystems, we stand the best chance at preserving them. Kaitlin Pomerantz is a visual artist, writer and educator based in Philadelphia. Pomerantz's interdisciplinary work in sculpture, site-specific installation, photography, and painting explores the relationship between humans and nature, landscape and land use, and themes of history, vacancy, and loss. Pomerantz is co-facilitator of the botanical arts project, WE THE WEEDS, which responds to natural histories and the relationship between built landscape and "nature" through si...te-based projects. Pomerantz has recently participated in place-based residencies including Land Arts of the American West (Texas and South West USA), Cabin Time (Sierra Nevadas) and Lugo Land (Lugo, Italy). She has most recently shown work at Sierra Nevada College, Nevada; Texas Tech Museum, Lubbock, Texas; Fjord Gallery and Little Berlin, Philadelphia. Pomerantz was part of Philadelphia's public art festival, Monument Lab, for which she did a project about stoops. When asked about her passions, Pomerantz says this: "I am passionate about reforming the public's relationship to shared space, landscape, "the commons". I am passionate about using art to help people have a sense of presence, a connection to time and place, and care and stewardship for nature and its existence within urban landscapes. I am passionate about historic preservation-- the care for the built world-- and equitable and ecologically sound land management giving fair and wide access to the natural world. I am passionate about the re-use of materials, about breaking unethical and unsustainable supply chains. I am passionate about teaching art and the way that it offers people crucial skills for critical thinking, seeing, and creating a new world. I am passionate about school reform and believe that access to education should be supported and encouraged for all people, regardless of economic background." See more

Caitlin McCormack is a Philadelphia-based textile artist who works primarily with crocheted cotton thread, which is stiffened with glue and positioned to resemble osteological specimens. These works convey McCormack’s thoughts regarding the way memories become distorted with the passing of time. With the addition of vintage fabrics and found objects, the sculptures build upon a very personal taxonomy of creatures symbolizing the artist's memories and experiences, and allow he...r to explore the ways that craft intersects with gender, the navigation of trauma, and the relationship between cloth and living, organic forms. When asked about her passions McCormack says this, "I'm passionate about the process of making art or creating anything in general. A loaf of bread, a ceramic vessel, a well-tilled patch of earth. Systems that allow organs to function within a tiny animal's body. These things are sort of all the same. I can't tell you how essential it is to my ability to proceed forward in my life - with the incredibly flawed brain that I have - to be able to use my hands to dye cotton string with pigments derived from the earth and to dredge the material in slime and watch it harden so that I can eventually shape it into any form I wish. There's nothing like it, and it's so enjoyable (and can be so painful). You are artists, so obviously you understand. It's just an amazing thing."
