He looks to the left at a set of lightning bells (a device of his own invention), which would ring to signal when lightning was striking the rod. While we miss being in our Philadelphia office, we love seeing posts like this! With our offices at 4th and Walnut, this is a fascinating throwback of a view we see almost every day - and a great look back at what our employees from the 1860s saw everyday!

Over our almost 268-year history as a company, we have weathered many storms and been through quite a few historic events! To name a few historical events we weathered; The Occupation of Philadelphia by the British in 1777. The Yellow Fever Epidemics from 1793-1798. The Economic Depression of 1837 - 1842.... The Civil War. WWI. The Stock Market Crash of 1929. WWII. We love our history and are proud of our place throughout many major historical events! The photo below shows the minutes of the Board Meeting in 1793 at the start of the Yellow Fever Epidemic and the other photo shows our courtyard when it was turned into a Victory Garden in 1943 during WWII.
