....but also kind of like a magician. When some people hear the word expediter they also tend to hear the word magician. But while the word expediter does indeed imply ‘get the job done faster’, it doesn’t mean ‘get the job done by skipping every requirement and step in the process because of some perceived special treatment and wand-waving abilities’.... We understand where this often unrealistic expectation comes from. It simply comes from misunderstanding and a lack of knowledge and information about the complex world of municipal permit approvals, along with a disdain for the process itself. Here’s a few things that an expediter (at least our company) does not do: X Bypass any required prerequisite approvals X Obtain a permit for work that is not up to code, unless you’re willing fix the work to get it up to code. X Avoid challenges altogether X Get you a permit sight unseen X Defy the laws of nature and time (and physics, gravity, and what have you) X Make up for lost time due to conditions outside of their control (changes of scope, global pandemics, things like that) Understand the approval process so it can be navigated efficiently Speed-up the process due to their navigational know-how Utilize working knowledge to create strategies that cut the overall timeline down Leverage existing relationships to request a speedier approval process when appropriate (This works more with prerequisite approval departments than Licenses & Inspections) Manage proper expectations Help you plan ahead for possible setbacks and roadblocks Create contingency plans for any possible setbacks and roadblocks We’re all about a bit of comedy mixed with education. Historical Commission, City Planning Commission, Art Commission and Streets Department were all required. The permit approval process took a whopping 8 months!
