After yesterday’s glum rain storm the birds are gleefully chirping while the flowers gently bounce in the wind. The joy of spring
We are so excited for our upcoming OPEN HOUSE! Open House 2020 will be next month, March 21st from 2:30pm-5pm (more info below). This is a great opportunity to work with master teachers and discover what the Alexander Technique is all about. We have an incredible faculty and a wonderful class of teacher trainees who can't wait to work with you! Please share with this event with friends, family and colleagues who have an interested in AT, in how they think and how how they can use themselves more effectively!
"...Thinking about yourself is above all sorting out what you really want, what you really wish...what you believe in, and constantly reminding yourself about it." -Carrington, THINKING ALOUD Any thoughts on this Carrington quote? Share below :)
During our last session Martha discussed the idea of hibernation; winter brings with it a quality of retiring and of absorbing and containing within. She mentioned Martha Graham's dance CAVE OF THE HEART. And though she called it an ugly dance, with its the sharp lines and savage nature...it seeks itself with a deep and fervent quality...an interesting study and one worth witnessing>>>
Here's The Philadelphia School for the Alexander Technique's own Joseph Arnold giving a detailed explanation of tensegrity within the lense of an AT lesson. It's awesome, check it out!
Here we have a short and sweet explanation of the human body as a tensegrity structure!
The is a popular AT video, and worth noting after our awesome session with Kathryn Armour last weekend!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfSGTkSjbhA
The human eye is an amazing mechanism, able to detect anywhere from a few photons to a few quadrillion, or switch focus from the screen in front of you to the distant horizon in a third of a second. How did these complex structures evolve?
Yoga or not, she has the right intention and one that F.M. would agree; don't waste a second!
Thank you, Tanya, for sharing this video! As Tanya posted: As I start my new journey doing Alexander Technique work, and whether my client is the average person, a person compromised, an equestrian or horse, I am finding more and more proof to my theory that without rhythm there is no balance in the body/mind. This work with Parkinsons patients shows that music creates an outside rhythm for the brain that redirects brain to move with that rhythm. The sporadic movement of the disease practically disappears.
Janet DiAntonio and I spent some time yesterday discussing a variety of movements and sports. In the fast pace sport of fencing you can notice that the quickest most efficient movement actually comes when you’re not set but already in movement, as Martha has said when you are organized and in primary movement (as Zoana coined primary control) you are prepared to make the directional choice that best serves your activity.
Here's Ariel Weiss, one of our fabulous teacher's giving a demonstration of the #AlexanderTechnique on ABC News. This a great example of teaching the technique! Please share your favorite AT quotes and videos, too!
The Alexander Technique gives us all things we have been looking for in a system of physical education: relief from strain due to maladjustment, and constant improvement in physical and mental health. We cannot ask for more from any system; nor, if we seriously desire to alter human beings in a desirable direction, can we ask any less. - Aldous Huxley, author
We are nature’s unique experiment to make the rational intelligence prove itself sounder than the reflex. Jacob Bronowski
Welcome students to the 2018/2019 school year! People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures. ~F. M. Alexander
