Things have to go smoother in 2021, right?
We could not be more excited to share that the Atrium Design Group LLC has submitted a redesigned plan for the Painted Bride site that would not only completely preserve the mosaic façade, but champion its unique character in the architecture. The proposal now moves on to the ZBA for approval and we are thrilled to work with Atrium to preserve and caretake the artwork in perpetuity. If the proposal is accepted this is truly a win for all parties involved: the mosaic is saved for future generations, the Painted Bride as an organization will receive the highest sale bid, the commercial space could potentially be used for another art or design space, and the developers will be known for a responsible and creative reuse project for the city. Stay tuned for how you can show your support for this project!

While the overturning of last year's ruling is heartbreaking for us, it has been a long journey for all parties involved filled with many ups and downs. We always hoped (and still do) that the Painted Bride could move forward with their mission without the needless destruction of this beloved, iconic public art masterpiece. No one wins when community artwork is destroyed by developers. Especially now, when there is so much loss around us. We have always offered our preservati...on services pro bono and in perpetuity to any owner of the building. In the past year, the Bride let us do a full assessment of the mural and we have shared our repair plan with them- we were very much looking forward to bringing the building back to life and preserving it for future generations of Philadelphians. We still look forward to any conversation with an owner who will save this cherished site. See more

After nearly 100 years, the art environment known as Watts Towers still stands over its neighborhood in LA. Built by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia between 1921-1945, the towers are made of concrete, shells, bottles, and steel. Recently site has been undergoing a large conservation project by the City of LA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to ensure it stands for many more years to come. Check out this great interview on SPACES Archives to learn more!
