3 Reasons Why A Strong Jobs Report Causes Mortgage Rates To Go Up: 1) A STRONG JOBS REPORT MEANS THE ECONOMY IS RECOVERING. A strong jobs report indicates hat people are employed and have money to spend. When people spend money, this causes the economy to grow, and companies make more profits. When that happens, investors tend to buy stocks instead of bonds, because stocks offer higher investment returns. When there are more sellers than buyers in the bond market, bond prices... go down and interest rates go up. 2) A STRONG JOBS REPORT CAN LEAD TO INFLATION. Average earnings increased in January more than expected, which could add to inflationary pressures in the economy. Higher inflation leads to higher interest rates. For example, a bond investor who was comfortable with a 3% average annual return in an environment with 2% average annual inflation, may need to earn a 6% average annual interest rate in an environment with 5% average annual inflation. If inflation continues to remain elevated, interest rates are sure to follow higher. 3) A STRONG JOBS REPORT CAN LEAD TO FED RATE HIKES. The strong jobs numbers mean that the Fed will have no choice but to follow through on its rate-hike plans, perhaps even more aggressively than initially anticipated. This means the Fed may: - Increase short-term interest rates, driving up the rates on business loans and home equity lines of credit. - Sell some of its vast holdings of Treasury bonds and mortgage bonds, driving up mortgage rates.
