AAN has announced an update on parity for video and phone encounters. Please see the announcement below from Neil Busis on behalf of the AAN : CMS announced on April 30 that Medicare will pay the same for telephone evaluation and management (E/M) visits as other E/M visits. The payments are retroactive to March 1. Some of the commercial insurances are doing this as well. The AAN and other organizations advocated for this policy. Why is this important? In order to provide ca...re for patients safely during the public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, patients and physicians and other qualified health care professionals (QHPs) should be geographically separated from one another whenever possible. The best alternative to an in-person encounter is a synchronous real-time two-way interactive audio and video visit. However, some patients cannot participate in these telehealth encounters. Some don't have the proper devices. Some don't have a sufficient broadband connection. Some can't operate the software or hardware. For these patients, telephone visits are the best alternative. It is fortunate that CMS now helps ensure health care access to all patients by reimbursing all these visit types at the same rates. Traditionally, patients have not been billed for telephone calls by physicians and other QHPs. During the public health emergency, though, patient care must be provided remotely if possible. Patients should be informed that they will be billed for E/M services by physicians and other QHPs by whatever method is most suitable for the patient. Telephone calls that do not include E/M services will not be billed, such as scheduling and medication refill requests. Calls by QHPs must reach or exceed 5 minutes to be billable, and the total time must be documented. The reimbursement rates for billing telephone E/M services closely match those of level 2-4 established outpatient visits (see below). Since the code numbers have not changed, physicians do not need to change any existing workflows. Telephone codes are determined by time. The table shows a comparison with outpatient E/M codes. Telephone Codes 99441 5-10 minutes 99442 11-20 minutes 99442 21-30 minutes You can read more at: https://www.cms.gov//summary-covid-19-emergency-declaratio https://www.aan.com//practic/telemedicine-and-remote-care/ https://www.cms.gov//trump-administration-issues-second-ro
