Day 4 of #abouttheartisan Tools of the trade I have to admit...I was a bit stumped on this one. Mostly because soap is just one of the things that we do and @planbeehomestead already chose milk! But truly most of our times isn’t spent soaping. Our time is spent caring for our sheep! Moving fences twice a week, shearing, trimming, worming, moving fences again, milking, fixing fences, weed whacking and so on. So if I had to say the best tool is our #carharrt gear. We all have bibs, coats, and pants. They keep us clean and warm and I couldn’t stand a winter, spring or fall without them. Pic of the kid because she is cuter in them than I am. #carharrtkids #farmkids #wefarminallweather #shepherdlikeagirl #futurefarmer
Eeekkkk!!! We have milk. The goat kids haven’t figured out that there are two teats...so I’m milking until they figure it out. #goatmilk #nubiangoats #milkingseason
Day 3 of #abouttheartisan Workspace I was dreading this one. I do not have a dedicated room or space. Instead I’ve been using this old Hoosier. Thankfully this beast has tons of storage space. Inside I have all of my oils. The big drawer on the bottom can even fit the big 35lb tubs! In the drawers I have all my silicone molds and in the top I stashed fragrances and additives. The best part of this piece is that the counter extends to give me more working room. I do love old pieces and the patina of age that cannot be found in new prices. They are so durable and sturdy and perfectly fit out farmhouse, so although is isn’t ideal...it works!!! #hoosier #antiques #workspace #soapmaking #oldfarmhouse
The ewes and lambs are officially in their first rotational grazing pasture! Over the last month as the grass was coming in they were slowly introduced to avoid overwhelming their rumens with new spring growth. They will now move pastures frequently to avoid overgrazing and reduce parasite exposure. This method provides mowing, fertilization and then rest for the pastures. The difference we see in them each year is amazing. Now if we could only get rid of skunk cabbage. #grassfedlamb #rotationalgrazing #shepherdlikeagirl #mustlovesheep #farmher #regenerativeagriculture
Day 2 of #abouttheartisan Inspiration. This one is easy! All of my soaps are inspired by nature. They are all seasonal and I try to incorporate seasonal ingredients. With the farm we feed twice a day everyday so that’s about 2-4 hours outside each day in all types of weather. In the spring I love the lush green pastures and the delicate spring flowers. In summer I love that magical hour before sunset and the bright summer blossoms, in fall it’s the leaves, crisp air, pumpkins and bonfires. In winter I am memorized by a fresh snowfall. When I see something pretty I immediately think of how I could translate that into soap. We like to eat by the seasons so of course want my soap seasonal too! #abouttheartisan #seasonalsoap #inspiredbynature #spring #summer #winter #fall
Meet the Artisan Day 1! I’m Katie and these are our twin toddlers Adam and Anna. They are actually one of the big reasons I got into soaping. These kiddos were not luck. We went through years of waiting and then eventually IVF. During my infertility journey I tried to be as healthy as possible and researched the many causes. I never realized how prevalent it was. I started eating strictly organic, started a garden, and we started with sheep in an attempt to raise our own prot...ein. Then I was diagnosed with a borderline ovarian tumor and had to have urgent surgery. Thankfully I had a great surgeon and care at MSK...and got to keep my left ovary! So after the tumor the journey to eliminate toxins intensified. We ditched plastics and started using all natural bath products. Problem was...I didn’t like them. So I set out to make my own. After lots of tweaking I found a good recipe and after transitioning completely to our soap the need for other products disappeared. I no longer need lotion! In the past every winter my hands would peel and crack. Initially I just made soaps for our family but as time went on I started to enjoy the designing of soap too. It has now become my artist outlet and if it’s a rainy day and the kiddos are napping I am sure to be in the kitchen making a big soapy mess! Thank you for following along. It’s not too late to join our #abouttheartisan week! #soapmaker #soapmaking #naturalsoaps #naturalsoapmaking #infertilityawareness #1in8 #ivfsuccess #twins #farmlife #mustlovesheep See more
Because I don’t have enough hair-brained ideas of my own I found some very creative soaper friends and together we created a 7 day event to share a bit more about soaping! Join us! We are welcoming artisans of all types; knitters, candle-makers, gardeners and definitely other soapers! #abouttheartisan #smallbusinesssupport #soapingwithfriends #naturalsoapbar #soapisart #goatmilksoap
