Youth Mental Health and COVID 19 Panel Two of our 11th grade students, Nicollete and Allheim, as well as Dr. K recently participated in a round table forum sponsored by the Harvard UNICEF student organization, organized by one of our former SciTech students Bana Almoussa. The other panelists included a practicing psychologist and psychiatrist who specialize in adolescent medicine. Our students spoke from the heart regarding their student perspective and experiences including sharing about the SciTech Stand Together Program in Pittsburgh. You can view the panel at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pQVNwcti7w&feature=youtu.be
Are you a prospective student or family member? If you were unable to attend our virtual open house you can view the PowerPoint's that staff and students shared on our website! https://pittsburghscitech.com/school-/prospective-students/
The SciTech 6th grade class participated in a virtual "Get to Know the Other Cohort" activity on Friday. They played fun virtual games (one being creating their own avatar) and got to know their other classmates!
(no were allowed but we wanted to still highlight this event!) The 10th and 11th grade Body and Behavior students will be participating in an educational event from the Center for Organ Recovery and Education this October and November, 2020. Every 16-year-old student who applies for a PA driver's license is asked to make a decision that could mean life or death to one of more than 7,000 Pennsylvanians who are currently on the transplant waiting list. However, most people... don’t really understand the process or what organ donation means. The critical shortage of organ and tissue donors is considered a national health crisis. The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) assists secondary students in pre-thinking the critical issues surrounding organ and tissue donation so that each teen can make an informed decision, and communicate that decision to his or her family members. As part of this field trip, students received general education on organ donation, they viewed a general cadaver demonstration via video stream through Adventures in Medicine and Science, from Saint Louis University, and they heard from staff at the CORE eye bank and real life stories from organ recipients and donor families. Students very much enjoyed the event and felt they gained knowledge and understanding about the process of organ donation do they could make an informed decision.
