It's time for a Saturday Story from our Assistant Principal Cellist, Adam Liu! Although born and raised in Tianjin, China and went to the grade schools in Beiji...ng, I spent most of my adult life in North America. So I very much consider myself an American. I have lived in Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Montreal. My favorite city is Pittsburgh since I love the size of the city and seasonal contrasting weather here, plus absolutely great people around me. My favorite sports have been always soccer and Shaolin. Besides cello I enjoy playing erhu occasionally. Glad to have learned a few tricks on households repairing works when a couple of plumbing and electric issues occurred in my house during the summer - things I would never have a chance to do myself. My neighbors are such wonderful support for each other. Grateful for that. Just had a fantastic Christmas time with my family. I can not wait for after the vaccines - when we can get back on stage play for our lovely city and our lovely friends again. Stay safe! Best wishes to all! HAPPY 2021!!

We usually start the year quietly. But this year we need energy. We need everybody’s energy to rebuild and to move forward. We need to commit to fighting for a ...world that allows for everyone to be healthy and to thrive. On this New Year’s Day, I hope that this musical flow of energy charges you to move, to act, and to feel common purpose. Happy new year to you all. Prelude to Cello Suite No. 6 in D Major, J.S. Bach #songsofhope
It’s with shock and sadness that we learned yesterday of the passing of our colleague Hong-Guang Jia, assistant Concertmaster (recently retired). He leaves a hu...ge hole as a pedagog and artist, colleague and family member, ours and his own. We hold his family in our hearts and hope for their healing through this difficult time. See more
Happy New Year! We hope you enjoy more health, happiness and music in 2021! from--The Musicians of the PSO. Please enjoy this video of Marta Krechkovsky and Kelsey Blumenthal as they play Auld Lang Syne, in a wonderful arrangement by our dear friend Aleksey Igudesman:
The 1st Saturday Story of 2021 comes from Kristina Yoder one of our PSO 1st violinists! When I was 6, my dad brought home a violin for me. My parents are not m...usicians, but they thought it was important that each of their children play an instrument. I wasn’t expecting a violin, but I liked the idea of having my own instrument. I thought I would just teach myself how to play, and I figured I’d practice at the same time as my older brother and sister. However, my parents thought I should take lessons. Sometimes, I took my doll to the lessons, and she would sit and listen while I played. Even as a young child, I remember being a perfectionist and I thought that making a mistake in a recital was the end of the world to the point that my first teacher was concerned about me! I eventually learned that making mistakes was part of being human. Sometimes I would put on concerts at home for my parents; I enjoyed designing a program that I would give to them as they entered our living room. When no one was available to listen, I would try getting our cat, Lucky, to sit on the couch and be my lone audience member which worked best if he happened to fall asleep. Neither Lucky or my parents cared if I made a mistake!
