Jackie DiNardo was recognized by Pitt for her selflessness and kindness by not only volunteering with Pitt events and vaccine clinics, but for all of her volunteer work within communities outside of the University. Jackie finds volunteering to be a great way to give back and help those in need. We applaud and thank her for all that she has done and will do in the future.

A Special Thank You to Veterans Veterans Day is a good time to remember that our freedom isn’t guaranteed. It’s protected by the men and women in our Armed Services. To all veterans at the School of Dental Medicine we thank you for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all. We salute you, thank you for your service!

November 11, 2020 is Veteran’s Day and Pitt Dental Medicine hopes that you will remember the homeless veterans of our city at this time. In their youth, these brave men and women helped to protect our freedomsmany paid a great price and now they suffer from physically and mentally disabling wounds that make it impossible for them to maintain a job, home, and family. Many current young veterans are returning from their deployments with physical and psychological disabilities... that leave them, too, homeless. This year, Tau Sigma, Pitt Dental Medicine’s military dental club, again has partnered with Shepard’s Heart Homeless Veterans Shelter near downtown. Shepard’s Heart is affiliated with the Pittsburgh VA Hospital. 100% of the funds collected are used to purchase low-denomination gift cards from Walmart, which are distributed to homeless vets through Shepard’s Heart. Donations may be made via the GoFundMe link, below. Check and cash donations may be dropped off at the Pitt Dental Medicine Office of Student Affairs in Salk Hall from 8am-4pm, Monday thru Friday. Tau Sigma is a military dental club with it’s roots at Pitt Dental Medicine. Dr. Robert Engelmeier started the club which now has expanded to 39 dental schools across the country and involves several hundred HPSP-sponsored dental students.

The ADEA Chapter for Students, Residents and Fellows at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine Featured in the November 2020 Issue of The Student Voice. The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine’s (Pitt SDM) ADEA Chapter is working hard to help students reach their full potential during this period of altered school workflow. Our chapter recently held a general body meeting, during which students heard about opportunities for learning, growth and ...scholarships that ADEA provides on both the national and local levels. Students were also encouraged to share their reflections on the virtual learning experience and suggest specific topics they are interested in learning more about through additional didactic and practical opportunities. An upcoming event we have planned is the latest installment of our Chapter’s panel on academic careers. Faculty members from a variety of disciplines are invited to describe their professional experiences and then answer students’ questions. Each pathway to the world of dental academia is unique and interesting. This event usually draws a full crowd, packing an entire lecture hall. However, this time around, we hope to hit our maximum number of attendees in a Zoom meeting format. Additionally, keeping up with the theme of fostering the professional careers of students after graduation, Pitt SDM’s ADEA Chapter is in the process of coordinating a panel of residents at the school to provide predoctoral students with information about the world of specialization and the process of applying to residencies.
