If someone steps on a nail, they should take the following steps to clean and dress the wound: Thoroughly wash the hands with soap. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to slow the bleeding. Flush the wound with clean water and soap as soon as possible for 510 minutes. If there is debris in the wound, disinfect some tweezers with rubbing alcohol and use them to remove as much as possible.... Apply antiseptic, antibiotic ointment, or both to the wound area if available. Dress the wound with a clean bandage. Once a person has dressed the wound, they should seek medical care and not put weight on the foot. #Tetanus #puncturewound #infection #emergencycare See more

FISH PEDICURES A fish pedicure, also known as a fish spa, involves patrons dipping their feet in a tub of water filled with small fish called Garra rufa. Garra rufa are sometimes referred to as doctor fish because they eat away dead skin found on peoples’ feet, leaving newer skin exposed. Garra rufa are native to the Middle East, where they have been used as a medical treatment for individuals with skin diseases, like psoriasis. One study has illustrated the effectiveness o...f fish pedicures in the treatment of psoriasis; however, this treatment was performed in a controlled setting at a medical university in Austria, not at a nail salon. CDC is not aware of any published reports on illnesses resulting from fish pedicures. Nail salon foot baths, however, have caused outbreaks of nontuberculous mycobacterial infections that left infected pedicure customers with boils and scars. See more

ARE MULTI-COLORED SOCKS BAD FOR FEET? The theory is that colored socks are bad for your health (and the health of your skin) because the synthetic dyes and fibers will seep in through the sweaty pores on your feet and infect your bloodstream. This is certainly great cause for concern if it happened to be true. So the answer is NO, MULTI-COLORED SOCKS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOUR FEET. Just an urban myth.

I came across this photo of a traveling podiatrist in Shanghai, China. He is taking care of a patient's corn. Podiatrists are the only medical specialists who are trained specifically to relieve foot pain. #footpain #podiatrist #cornsandcallouses

Did you know that certain yeasts can affect toenail growth. Candida albicans is one and unfortunately there is no Rx treatment for it. #candidaalbicans #toenailfungus #dermatophytes #Jublia #Lamisil #penlac

Ischemic (or arterial) ulcers are a type of vascular ulcer that occurs when there is inadequate blood supply to the skin. They are most frequently caused by peripheral vascular disease or arterial embolization. They predominantly involve the feet but, occasionally, can be seen with upper extremity occlusive disease such as thoracic outlet syndrome or Raynaud phenomenon. Ischemic ulcers are often chronic in nature and are characteristically quite painful relative to other type...s of ulcers. Their occurrence may be precipitated by seemingly trivial trauma or localized pressure. The incidence of ischemic ulcers increases with advancing age; older individuals are also more likely to exhibit ulcers of mixed etiology. Patients with ischemic ulcers due to peripheral vascular disease will often give a history of claudication. Risk factors for the development of these ulcers include diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, a history of coronary artery disease, and hypertension. Many patients have associated diabetes mellitus. #PVD #ischemia #poorcirculation #footulcers #legulcers See more

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral infection of the skin and occasionally of the conjunctiva of the eyes. The lesions are small raised bumps, usually about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in diameter. They have flat or slightly dimpled tops, and therefore are usually not confused with pimple-like bumps. They do not have the coarse or rough surface of a wart. They are usually flesh-colored or slightly yellow, but can become red if inflamed. Unless inflamed, they do not hurt or itch. They can occur on any part of the body, though I have most often seen them on the abdomen or upper thighs. #moluscumcontagiosum #waterwart #virus

Flip flops are synonymous with summertime! The warm weather arrives and suddenly we throw away the boots and shoes and we break right into those toe-busting footwear. Despite the fun of summer and the freedom of your toes, there are some injuries to be wary of when wearing flip flops. Take a peek at the Top 3 Injuries! Fractures Speaking of toe-busting, having your toes open to the fresh world, you are more susceptible to fractures on those toes when you are giving them fre...edom to the world that they don’t normally bump into (at least up in the northern states). Plantar Fasciitis When going from supportive shoes in the cold months to suddenly wearing unsupportive shoes, this causes the muscles in the foot to work harder creating increased pain in the heel or sole of the foot. Tendonitis If you are not used to wearing shoes without support, the mechanics of your bones and may change and flatten out causing the tendons in your ankle to worker harder than they are used to. If you find yourself struggling with any of these problems, call Dr. Drezner at 610-678-2776 who will help you get back on track to enjoy the rest of your summer! Sorry, we can’t help sunburns! #flipflops #injuries #footdoctor #podiatrist #drdrezner See more

Among one of the odder reported symptoms of Covid-19 has been the mysterious COVID toes. People have been reporting that their toes are red, sore, itchy and discolored, often with no or limited other symptoms that would indicate they were sick with Covid-19. For many, the condition feels and looks like chilblains, which can be experienced when toes and feet get too cold, but shortly after the pandemic started, reports and even tweets from people experiencing these symptoms started to roll in from all over the world, including in warm places where this was unlikely to be the cause. Call Dr. Drezner if you have any questions. 610-678-2776

It’s rare that two feet are exactly the same size; one of them is often larger than the other. Thats why it is important to try on both shoes to make sure the fit is comfortable.

This is a seriously infected toe. It will probably have to be amputated. If you are diabetic you should see a podiatrist on a regular basis to prevent these problems associated with your feet.

Diabetic neuropathy is a peripheral nerve disorder caused by diabetes or poor blood sugar control. The most common types of diabetic neuropathy result in problems with sensation in the feet. It can develop slowly after many years of diabetes or may occur early in the disease. The symptoms are numbness, pain, or tingling in the feet or lower legs. The pain can be intense and require treatment to relieve the discomfort. The loss of sensation in the feet may also increase the possibility that foot injuries will go unnoticed and develop into ulcers or lesions that become infected. In some cases, diabetic neuropathy can be associated with difficulty walking and some weakness in the foot muscles.

THE AVERAGE PERSON WALKS ABOUT 100,000 MILES IN A LIFETIME. That’s a lot of stress on our feet. It’s not surprising, then, that lower back pain, headaches, indigestion, and spine misalignment are often related to foot problems. Some runners blow way past this mark: They've logged at least 100,000 in running miles alone. One committed runner, Herb Fred, has run a whopping 247,142 miles
