What would you do with a mirror that could answer the fairy tale question, Who’s the fairest of them all? Welcome it? Be terrified of it? What do you see in your own mirror? I asked Tammy to let me be her mirror. In a shoot like this, I don’t have a particular aesthetic direction: wear this, do that with your hair, put this makeup on, stand like this. Instead, it grows out of conversation. The first part of the shoot was just Tammy sitting in a chair talking to me. It went ...on from there in a direction that led to a positive reflection of self image; her self image; addressing her doubts; reinforcing her confidence. I have met a lot of women whose focus is on what they have lost through aging that they will never see again. Childbirth, nursing, gravity, the sun, the wind and now they’re something less, physically, than they were. But what about what you’ve gained? Wisdom, compassion, strength. You made life. You nurtured it. You found love. You survived loss. You got up again. You recovered from addiction. You beat cancer. You faced tragedy and you’re still here. These things leave marks. Stretch marks. Sag. Scars. Well loved boobs. Wrinkles around eyes from smiles and worry. But your body tells your story. These are the marks of a hero. And I can show you the hero, in a quiet peaceful setting away from the madness. I’m the mirror who can tell you, You are the fairest of them all! See more
