Making his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates is Chase De Jong, a familiar face to the DICK'S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series as a member of the 2008 Long... Beach Pony Baseball title team. De Jong earned his second DSGPLWS victory in the 2008 championship game against Taichung City, Taiwan, pitching a complete game and allowing only one earned run on five hits. Today marks 70 years for PONY Baseball & Softball. On this day, members of the Welfare and Recreation Committee, Mayor Wilson, Councilmen Goodridge, and Shrontz met in the Conference Room of the Observer Publishing Company. They discussed the formation of a baseball league for boys too old to play in Little League. There were six men whole seemed to stand out as sharing the common qualifications of having been the initial group to consider the organization of the league. Th...ese men are Lew Hays who was named Commissioner of PONY League in June 1951, William E. Amos served on the national Board of Directors, J. Howard Ware also served on the national Board of Directors, Paul S. Shearn kept minutes of the proceedings in the early days as Secretary- Pro-Tem and later Secretary. John Sorice was the first player agent for PONY League and later served on the national Board of Directors. And Morris Weber served on the national Board of Directors. Within the first year, these men determined an age group, 13 and 14 years of age will be the PONY League of Washington. They developed the constitution for PONY League. The men that volunteered to serve on this committee to form a constitution: George Mucey, Morris Weber, William Amos, Paul Shearn, and Lew Hays. George Mucey was named Chairman. Later, they announced that the PONY League field would be laid out in Washington City Park. Happy Founders Day!
